Our community is full of many kinds of talents, creativity, and expertise. Most people in our community dream of being able to make a living by working for themselves and putting their creativity and skills to use instead of working in underpaid, exploitative jobs. One way to support each other is by keeping our money in our community, and choosing to buy products and services from each other whenever we can.

🔈🔈Attention friends! On Monday, July 11th at 6 pm, the Finance Committee is hosting a public hearing about 1.) the Mayor’s plan for the distribution of American Rescue Plan funding, and 2.) the counter-proposals of the Sisters in Diaspora and our coalition. For almost a year we have been advocating for the city to use this money to start seriously addressing the housing crisis in New Haven. Out of a total of 115 million dollars we are proposing that the city spend 62.5 million on housing, while the mayor is proposing to spend only 10 to 14 million. To us this is unacceptable, given that every day it is getting harder to afford rent as a normal working-class resident of New Haven.

Join us on Monday to raise our voices and show the City that housing is a primary concern for our community and MUST be a bigger priority of our local government. Housing is a human right!! If you would like any support in writing testimony, please contact [email protected]

On Monday, the Sisters in Diaspora Collective gathered with friends and coalition partners at New Haven City Hall to present our proposals for the distribution of American Rescue Plan funding in front of the Board of Alders Finance Committee. While the City is planning to spend just 10 million dollars on housing out of 115 million available dollars, we are urging the City to increase their investment in housing to 62.5 million.

“There is a housing crisis in New Haven, and housing is a human right. We hope to be partners in thinking through how to really implement these proposals. We will continue to be here. We will continue to organize and turn out and confront this issue as a community.”

Yesterday, City Council heard the second reading of the allowable rent increase ordinance I introduced and it passed, it's now official. Thank you once again to all those who shared their stories of struggling under our current housing crisis. Next: social housing! "We, the Sisters in Diaspora Collective, want to see the urgency of this housing crisis reflected in the city’s spending and priorities. Last year, the city of West Haven received a one-time payment of $29 million from the federal government through the American Rescue Plan to help recover from the effects of COVID-19. Mayor Rossi has proposed a plan to allocate just $1 million of this fund towards housing, creating a “housing crisis fund” that would “establish short-term emergency housing facilities for families experiencing an unavoidable housing crisis.” Meanwhile, the mayor’s plan proposes to allocate $2.4 million in bonuses to police officers for the next two years. This plan demonstrates the mayor’s willingness to prioritize policing, a move which community members and organizers across Connecticut and the U.S. have opposed at least since 2020, over providing affordable housing for West Haven community members."

Read the Sister in Diaspora Collective's op-ed in the New Haven Register about 's need to prioritize housing in the allocation of funds.

Last weekend, members of the Sisters in Diaspora Collective and a coalition of allies gathered in front of New Haven City Hall for a speak out. We emphasized that housing is a right - a basic component of human life that should be secured for all, in a city where 54% of tenants face housing insecurity. We called upon the New Haven Board of Alder to push Mayor Elicker to increase ARP funding for housing, increase rent relief, and purchase buildings for social housing. We thank everyone who showed up to support the Sisters in Diaspora and added their voice to our ongoing campaign towards equitable housing policies.
