We had a great first day back! Students had a chance to meet all their teachers today, learn about their classes for the year, catch up with friends, and meet new classmates.

While you’ve been soaking up the last days of summer, our amazing teachers & staff have been hard at work getting ready for the new year!

From setting up classrooms to preparing and building our learning community, we are ready to make this the best year yet!

NHPS and the City of New Haven are excited to announce the New Haven Afterschool Initiative which will provide low-cost and free afterschool at NHPS elementary and middle schools every school day from school dismissal to 5:30 pm. Registration opens Monday, August 17th at 12pm here: newhavenct.gov/afterschool. Through a partnership with the Boys & Girls Club and New Haven Counts, programming will focus on learning and enrichment, sports and physical activity, and developing positive relationships with peers and adult mentors. The program will cost $25 per week for families and will be free for families who receive Care4Kids, SNAP, or other assistance programs. See attached flyer for details.

Today we wrapped up our Summer Bridge program with a few writing prompts, time for independent reading, a scavenger hunt at Lost In New Haven, time to finish our numbers art project, and discussions of Huda F are You led by student leaders.

When the day ended, more than half of the students who attended Summer Bridge finished their first summer reading book, and many went home with their next read. They also participated in at least two activities that count towards Metro’s “read to, do two” summer reading program!

Day 3 of Summer Bridge!
Half of the students participated in classroom activities and art activities connected to independent reading, our digital media pathway, and our business pathway.
The other half of the students went to Outer Island to explore and do hands on science activities!
Tomorrow, students will swap schedules!
