Each year, the Rockland County Legislature proudly celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing members of Rockland’s Latino community whose achievements, leadership and service make a difference in the lives of others.

This year, we are honored to recognize individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary service to Rockland County and whose contributions help make our community stronger:

* Alays Aquino - Officer, Haverstraw Town Police Department
* Ariel Diaz — President, Quisqueya Sports Club
* Kenia Serrano — Community Leader & Trustee, Village of West Haverstraw

Join us as we celebrate our honorees and the many contributions of Rockland’s Latino community. The program will be led by Rockland County Legislature Chairman Jay Hod Jr. All are welcome!

Today, Rockland County came together to mark 25 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and to remember the lives lost on that terrible day.

At the September 11 Memorial Ceremony at Haverstraw Bay County Park, families, first responders, community members and local officials to honor those we lost and reflect on the lasting impact of September 11.

Rockland County Legislature Deputy Majority Leader Dr. Dana G. Stilley was among the speakers, and Legislators Paul Cleary, Jesse Malowitz, Doug Jobson, Minority Leader Lon Hofstein, Will Kennelly and Beth Davidson were among those who attended.

We remember our Rockland neighbors who never returned home. We remember the courage and sacrifice of the first responders and all who rushed to help. And we remember those who became ill and died in the years that followed because of their exposure to toxins at Ground Zero.

Twenty-five years later, their lives, their courage and their sacrifice remain in our hearts.

We will never forget.

The Rockland County Department of Health will offer flu, measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and tetanus vaccines at various community locations throughout Rockland County.

“As Rosh Hashanah begins, I extend my warmest wishes to Rockland County’s Jewish community and to Jewish families everywhere for a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.

“Rosh Hashanah is a time of reflection, renewal and hope for the year ahead. This year, those wishes for peace and security carry particular meaning. At a time when antisemitism remains a very real threat, many Jewish families are entering the High Holy Days with concerns for their safety and with the painful knowledge that people have been targeted simply because they are Jewish.

“Here in Rockland County, where the Jewish community is such an important part of the fabric of our county, we must continue to make clear that antisemitism, hatred and violence have no place in our community. Every person should be able to practice their faith, walk through their neighborhood and gather with family and friends without fear.

“May this New Year bring greater understanding, greater peace and brighter days ahead. On behalf of the Rockland County Legislature, I wish all who are celebrating a sweet, peaceful and healthy New Year.”

Twenty-five years have passed since the September 11 terrorist attacks, but we will never forget the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the courage and sacrifice of so many.

The Rockland County Legislature joins our community and our nation in remembering all those we lost on September 11, 2001, including our Rockland neighbors, and all those who have suffered or died from 9/11-related illnesses.

We remember them. We honor them. We will never forget.

Rockland County Legislator Jesse Malowitz joined community leaders and residents for the dedication of the new Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey Community Green, a five-acre community park at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.

The dedication holds special meaning for Legislator Malowitz, who worked for Congresswoman Lowey for more than six years as a district representative, helping constituents navigate federal agencies, addressing local issues and participating in community events throughout the district.

Congresswoman Lowey represented communities in Westchester and Rockland counties, as well as portions of the Bronx and Queens, during her 32 years in Congress. She made history as the first woman to chair the powerful House Appropriations Committee and was a strong advocate for education, children and families, environmental protection, public health and many other issues affecting the communities she served.

Congresswoman Lowey retired in 2020 and passed away last year. The new Community Green honors her decades of public service and her lasting legacy throughout the region.

Among the attendees was former President Bill Clinton. Also attending (in photo) was her husband of more than 60 years, Steve Lowey, and two additional former constituent services representatives, former State Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick and Stephen M. Papas, the Executive Director of Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland.

The Rockland County Youth Bureau is now accepting applications for 2026–2027 Youth Sports Funding. Not-for-profits, community-based organizations, and municipal agencies that provide a variety of youth sports and physical recreation activities for youth under 18 can apply. Funding supports programs that keep youth active, healthy, and engaged - from sports and fitness to hiking, yoga, dance, recreation, and other physical activity opportunities.
