New City Fire Engine Company No. 1 Auxiliary

🔥 Attention CCSD students in grades K–5!
If you attend Laurel Plains, Link, Little Tor, New City, Strawtown, or Woodglen Elementary Schools, the New City Fire Engine Company No. 1 is once again sponsoring its annual Fire Prevention Contest!
The theme of the contest is based on the national E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home) initiative. The contest goal is to teach students essential life-saving skills, including how to:
* Identify a family meeting place
* Find two ways out of their bedroom
* Locate two exits from every room
* Follow the critical rule: “Once you’re out, stay out.”
📝 Entry forms will be available from your school/teacher after September 3rd. Forms will be collected from the schools for judging on Wednesday, September 23rd.
🏆 Winners will be notified by letter (delivered to the school), and awards will be presented at the fire company’s annual Open House on Sunday, October 4th.

During the storm, please stay off the road and avoid any unnecessary travel.

In the event of a downed power line, stay far away from it and let the trained professionals from Orange & Rockland make the proper repairs

Do NOT use your oven to heat your home.

If you need to use a space heater, be sure there are no items within 3 feet of the space heater.

Should you lose power and use candles for light, Do NOT leave the candles unattended, nor within reach of children.

If you use a fireplace, make sure your flue is open when in use, and your chimney has been properly cleaned.

Be sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working properly.

Our equipment is prepped and ready to go while members are standing by the firehouse tonight to answer any calls that come in.

Should you have an emergency in your home, evacuate and dial 911.

Stay safe and remember town ordinance states that property owners are responsible to clear snow from around fire hydrants after a snowfall.

Heartfelt condolences to the Coyle family

It is with deep regret that the New City Fire Engine Company No. 1 announces the passing of Life Member John “Jack” Coyle, 94, on February 3, 2026.

He was born on June 13, 1931, in Nyack, New York, to John and Mildred Coyle.

Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Janice Coyle, and by his brother, Douglas Coyle. He is survived by his son John Coyle and wife Theresa; daughter Katherine Mistele and husband Bill; and his cherished granddaughters, Sarah Mistele, Carolyn Benson and husband Tyler, and Charlsey Coyle.

Jack was a graduate of Nyack High School and Southern Methodist University and proudly served in the United States Army. He spent his professional life in the insurance and real estate industry with Coyle and Coyle Inc. He was also an active and devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in New City.

A lifelong servant to his community, Jack joined the New City Fire Department on May 1, 1956, and at the time of his passing was its oldest living member, having served for an extraordinary 70 years. During his tenure, he served on numerous committees including the Carnival Committee, Fire Insurance Committee, Blood Drive, and the 1995 Convention Committee. An avid and dedicated member of the fire police, Jack responded to calls at all hours and in all weather conditions up until a couple of years ago. He will be greatly missed.

Funeral Arrangements:
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 365 Strawtown Road, New City, NY 10956. A Firematic Service will take place at 7:00 p.m.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church.

May he rest in peace.

Help us help you by clearing snow and ice around the hydrant on your property. In the event of an emergency where we need to use a hydrant, this saves valuable time when hooking up the hose to the hydrant.

Remember, during the storm, if you have an emergency, do not wait—call 911.
