** SATURDAY AFTERNOON WILDFIRE RISK **

A combination of lowering relative humidity, gusty winds, and recent dry conditions leaves a moderate to high wildfire risk this afternoon and evening across Pennsylvania. Wind gusts 20 - 30 mph with relative humidity levels getting as low as 25-30% will increase this risk. 🔥

Residents are urged to exercise caution when handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery, ci******es, or matches. If dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the potential to spread rapidly.

Please help us help you. If your home or business has a fire hydrant nearby, keep it clear of snow in case we need to access them during an emergency.

It is recommended to clear a 3’ radius around the hydrant and a clear path from the front of the hydrant to the road.

****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE****

Shenango Township Emergency Management Prepared for Significant Winter Storm

Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania — Shenango Township Emergency Management officials are monitoring a significant winter storm forecast to impact Shenango Township and the Lawrence County region starting on Sunday. Current weather projections indicate the potential for significant snowfall, with accumulations possibly exceeding 12 inches, which may result in hazardous conditions. Expect continuous snowfall for 30-36 hours.

Township officials have taken proactive steps in preparation for the storm. Shenango Township Public Works, the Shenango Area Fire District, and the Shenango Township Police Department have coordinated planning and readiness measures to ensure an effective and uninterrupted response.

Public Works operations will be conducted based on roadway conditions. Road salt supplies are sufficient at this time; however, salt will be strategically utilized to prevent supplies from being depleted before the storm is finished. Priority will be given to primary roadways, emergency routes, and critical infrastructure.
Residents should be aware that roadways are expected to remain snow-covered and may be considered dangerous for travel for the duration of the storm, particularly during periods of heavy snowfall and reduced visibility. Motorists are strongly encouraged to use caution and limit non-essential travel as conditions warrant.

Residents are also asked to assist snow removal efforts by parking vehicles off roadways when possible.

Additional safety guidance for residents includes:

• Power outages: If you experience a loss of electricity, immediately contact your electric provider.

• Emergency preparedness: Keep sufficient food, water, and heating supplies on hand.

• Winter driving: Ensure vehicles are winter-ready, carry an emergency kit, and allow extra travel time if travel is necessary.

• Vulnerable populations: Check on elderly neighbors or those with special needs to ensure they are safe and prepared.

Shenango Township Emergency Management will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide updates as appropriate.

In the event of an emergency, residents should dial 911.

Last evening we had the pleasure of hosting a tabletop exercise based on a transportation incident. We had multiple participants representing Fire Departments, EMS agencies, Hazardous Materials Teams, Emergency Management, Amateur Radio Services and Public Utilities. This was an excellent opportunity to work through a complex incident in a controlled setting. These exercises afford us the opportunity to review plans, find strengths, and most importantly, identify areas for improvement so we are better prepared when a real incident occurs. Thank you to the Shenango Area Fire District for allowing us to host this at their South New Castle Station and to CAI Central for facilitating another great exercise. And most importantly, thank you to all the participants who made this exercise a success.
