On May 2, 1866, work on the new Henry County Courthouse was "progressing rapidly," according to the New Castle Courier. "The building will be spacious, and, on paper, presents a fine outside appearance," the article read.

The new courthouse replaced Henry County's second such facility, which was destroyed by fire on Feb. 13, 1864. The courthouse was finished in 1869 and is still in use today.

On this day in history, Sept. 21, 1990, the New Castle Achievement Day Convocation featured 1950 graduate Abe Roth as guest speaker. He is the uncle of rock star David Lee Roth of Van Halen, who actually lived in New Castle for a short time as a youth.

Best known for his wild, energetic stage persona, David was the original lead vocalist of the hard rock band Van Halen across three stints, from 1974 to 1985, in 1996 and again from 2006 to their disbandment in 2020.[2] He was also known as a successful solo artist, releasing numerous RIAA-certified Gold and Platinum albums.

After more than two decades apart, Roth re-joined Van Halen in 2006 for a North American tour that became the highest-grossing in the band's history and one of the highest-grossing of that year.[5] In 2012, Roth and Van Halen released the comeback album A Different Kind of Truth. In 2007, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen.

He reflected on his time in New Castle in a 2019 interview with Indianapolis radio station Q95's "Stuck and Gunner" show.

"My grandparents moved to New Castle in 1913," he said. "It's in the sense of humor, the 'get it done' and how do we get it done approach work ethic of Van Halen, frankly. It's a Midwest approach, not some flakey Hollywood horse manure."
