Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not just something to celebrate. It is something we must protect.

More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the last enslaved Americans were finally told they were free. That delay is a powerful reminder that justice deferred is justice denied.

Today we honor the resilience, courage and contributions of Black Americans who have shaped our communities, our state and our nation. We also recommit ourselves to the unfinished work of building an Indiana where freedom, opportunity and dignity belong to everyone.

Because the promise of freedom means little unless it is shared by all.
