US 6 Elk Creek Bridge Replacement
Week of April 14-17, 2026
TRAFFIC IMPACTS: Due to the unfortunate incident with the drill rig that occurred on Monday, April 13, a crane will be set up tomorrow, Wednesday, April 15 to work on recovery of the equipment. The project team will begin this work at 7 a.m. tomorrow. Motorists should expect a 15-20 minute delay as the traffic will be reduced to one-lane, alternating traffic over the existing detour. It’s important to note that no one was injured in the incident and that no fuel was spilled into Elk Creek.
Our team understands the impact to the school traffic in the morning and appreciates your patience and understanding around this operation. Interstate 70 remains an option as a viable detour.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS:
The project has working time restrictions to accommodate commuter and school traffic. The team will not implement lane closures from 6:30-8:30 a.m. and 3-5 p.m.
One lane alternating traffic over the detour.

Project Description
The project consists of replacing the US 6 Elk Creek Bridge structure over Elk Creek on the west end of town at Mile Point 105.8. A detour will be constructed that will use the existing truss bridge relocated to the south of the existing location so traffic will remain in a two lane configuration while the new bridge structure is being built. Work on this project will also relocate utilities, build retaining walls, shore up the banks of Elk Creek with riprap, guardrail, erosion control and striping.
The new bridge structure is designed to be a full size, highway rated structure to support commercial vehicle loads and accommodate traffic that often utilizes this stretch of US 6 as an alternate route in the event of an Interstate 70 closure. There will also be a detached pedestrian bridge built on the north side of the new bridge.
In the interest of pedestrian safety, when work commences in November, all pedestrian access will be closed at the bridge. The identified alternate route for pedestrians is north 7th Street to the pedestrian bridge at Rollie Gordon Park.
In early Spring, the team will implement a full three to four day closure of US 6 at Mile Point 105.8 to slide the existing bridge into the detour alignment. The team is planning to coordinate this closure to have minimal impacts by beginning on a Thursday evening through a Sunday evening to accommodate commuter and school traffic.
