As we reflect on all the highlights from the First State Dinner, one moment that stands out is honoring some of Delaware’s most dedicated Democrats and public servants for the work they have done and continue to do not just for our party but for the First State. Each of these honorees has made a remarkable impact often without seeking praise or recognition which made it all the more meaningful to celebrate them.Help us in further congratulating these incredible leaders:

Jalyn I. Powell – Inaugural Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Rising Star Award Recipient: The first-ever recipient of this award recognized for her impactful work as founder of OUTLOUD DE Inc., a youth-centered nonprofit advancing wellness, equity, and systemic change across Delaware.

Jeffrey Quiggle – John Patrick Healy Extraordinary Volunteer Award Recipient: Honored for his transformative service to the Delaware Democrats as RD9 Vice Committee Chair, co-founder of the Delaware Democratic Veterans and Military Families Caucus, and for the many roles he has taken on to expand access and opportunity for our most vulnerable neighbors.

State Senator Dave Sokola – Alexis I. DuPont Bayard Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient: Recognized for his decades-long public service career fighting for stronger schools, safer communities, civil rights, and a brighter future for generations of Delawareans.

Eid Mubarak to all who are celebrating!

Today marks the beginning of Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, one of the most sacred observances in the Islamic calendar. Eid al-Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim's devotion to God and coincides with the culmination of Hajj, the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca. It is a time of prayer, gratitude, generosity, and gathering with family and community.

To Delaware's Muslim families and communities: we see you, we celebrate with you, and we are grateful for everything you contribute to our state. Eid Mubarak!

Even though a few weeks have passed, we still can’t get over what a smashing success the 2026 First State Dinner was.

It was a historic night — our largest dinner yet — with nearly 800 dedicated Delaware Democrats committed to moving the First State forward.

The evening was filled with unforgettable moments, as our state leaders and federal delegation reminded us what steady, principled leadership looks like in action. We were inspired by the powerful words of Democratic National Committee Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta and proud to honor Delaware’s favorite son, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. for his lifelong commitment to our state and nation. The night ended on an electrifying high note with a keynote address from Reverend Senator Raphael Warnock.

We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, planning committee, and every volunteer and supporter who helped make the event a seamless and powerful success.

The entire evening served as a powerful reminder that we have the strength to push back against efforts to move our country backward — and that we will prevail, just as history has shown time and time again.

But we can’t do it alone. Help us continue building on this momentum: volunteer, donate, and get involved as we gear up for a monumental midterm election.

Since our nation's founding, more than 1.3 million American service members have died in war. Memorial Day is the day we honor those who gave their lives in service to this country.

Many veterans ask that we not say "Happy Memorial Day." For those who served, this day can mean revisiting the loss of friends and comrades who never came home. So this weekend, as you spend time with family and friends, take a moment to reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Check in on the veterans in your life. Offer support if they need it, and space if they want it. If you know a veteran who is struggling, help is available through the 988 Crisis Line.

Honoring the fallen means more than ceremonies once a year. It means supporting healthcare, combating homelessness, protecting veterans and military families, and defending the democratic rights so many Americans died to protect.

It also means demanding that we never send Americans into war unless every other option has been exhausted. Every name on every memorial wall represents a profound sacrifice. Those decisions must never be made casually, politically, or dishonestly.

To truly honor those who gave what Lincoln called "the last full measure of devotion," we must hold our leaders to a standard worthy of that sacrifice.
Our fallen heroes deserve that much. So do the living who may be called to serve next.

Today Delaware mourns the profound loss of a dedicated public servant, Mike Purzycki. In his service to New Castle County and as Mayor of the City of Wilmington, he brought to life a vision of opportunity, highlighting just how much this Tiny Wonder has to offer. His successes reflected the strength of our party and our shared dedication to moving the First State forward. His love for Delaware was unwavering and will remain a lasting part of his legacy as we come together to celebrate his life. We extend our sincerest condolences to his loved ones and all who had the privilege of knowing him during this difficult time.

Today is Armed Forces Day, a day dedicated not to veterans of past service, but to the men and women currently serving in uniform.

Delaware has always been proud of its military community. From Dover Air Force Base to the Delaware Army National Guard and Delaware Air National Guard, our state understands the meaning of service, sacrifice, and duty.

Today, we say thank you, not as a formality, but with genuine gratitude for those who wear the uniform and carry that responsibility on behalf of all of us.

To every Delaware service member serving at home and abroad: we see you, we honor you, and we are deeply grateful for your service.

Sixty-one years ago, Americans marched, bled, and died for the right to vote. Congress responded with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most consequential pieces of legislation in our nation’s history.

Last week, the Supreme Court’s six-justice conservative majority effectively eviscerated Section 2 of that law in Louisiana v. Callais, clearing the way for states to engage in the discriminatory practice of vote dilution against Black and brown voters. Justice Elena Kagan warned in dissent that plaintiffs challenging schemes designed to dilute minority representation will now find it “nearly impossible” to succeed in court.

Republican-controlled Southern states wasted no time.

Louisiana halted a congressional primary already underway to redraw its map and eliminate a majority-Black district. Tennessee moved to crack the district anchored by Memphis, the state’s largest Black city, splitting it across three Republican-held districts to dilute Black voting power into meaninglessness. Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina immediately began efforts to dismantle court-ordered maps designed to ensure Black voters had a meaningful voice in choosing their representatives.

The practical result, if these efforts succeed, will be the near-elimination of Black representation in Congress across much of the South.

And this ruling does not stop at Congress. It applies to state legislatures, county commissions, city councils, and school boards, every level of government where representation shapes the lives of real people.

Delaware Democrats believe the right to vote, and the right to have that vote count equally, is not negotiable. We will continue to fight for every Delawarean’s voice in our democracy in Dover, in Washington, and wherever that fight must be taken.

A little under an hour remains to cast your vote in Delaware’s school board elections for the Appoquinimink, Caesar Rodney, Christina, Colonial, Delmar, Milford, and Red Clay Consolidated school districts.

As Chair Brady says, every election matters — especially school board elections, which play a critical role in shaping our education system and often see low voter turnout. Let’s change that!

There’s still time to head to the polls and make your voice heard.

Delaware, there’s an election this Tuesday, May 12.

School board elections may not always make headlines, but the decisions made by school boards shape the future of our communities every single day. School board members hire superintendents, approve budgets, help set priorities for our schools, and make decisions that impact students, educators, and families across Delaware.

This year, the majority of Delaware’s 19 school districts are holding elections, with competitive races in Appoquinimink, Christina, Colonial, Delmar, Caesar Rodney, Milford, and Red Clay Consolidated.

Polls are open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Find your polling place at elections.delaware.gov.

Your voice matters. Your community matters. Public education matters. Show up and vote.

On Friday (May 8, 2026), the Virginia Supreme Court did something that should alarm every American who believes in democracy: it approved a Republican effort to throw out the results of a special election in which voters approved a new congressional map, overruling the will of Virginians after the election had already taken place.

Virginia voters approved the redistricting amendment by a 52–48 margin on April 21. The votes were cast. The people spoke. But on a procedural technicality, the court nullified the result anyway.

This is part of a coordinated national effort.

Texas redrew its maps to create five additional Republican-leaning congressional seats. Florida Republicans moved almost immediately after the Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act to advance aggressively gerrymandered maps. Across the country, the strategy is increasingly clear: when you cannot win over voters, redraw the voters instead.

Delaware has a Democratic trifecta and some of the strongest voting protections in the country. That did not happen by accident, and it will not maintain itself without participation and vigilance.

This is why elections at every level matter. Democracy only works when the will of the voters is respected. And democracy only works when voters pick their elected officials, not the other way around.
