I was excited to attend the grand opening of Juiced at The Soul Cafe, today at 101 N Mill St in New Castle, walking distance from my office.

Cheranda Odem, Operations Manager, works alongside her aunt, Shawn Thompkins, who is a certified herbalist and specializes in teas. The cafe offers original blends of different drinks all made with natural ingredients.

They are strategically positioned across from the new park that is under renovation. Hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 am -6:00 pm.

It was a beautiful afternoon for the first annual Sean and Garrett Memorial walk remembering loved ones who have died from an overdose, sponsored by Vision Ministries.

Lawrence County recorded one of the highest fatal drug overdose rates in Pennsylvania, topping or nearly topping statewide per capita.

Addiction impacts all of us. I was reminded of how this evil affected my own family with the death of my cousin Dena.

The event ended with a beautiful balloon release, remembering loved ones but also those in recovery. And finally a fly release in their memory.

As we welcome Rosh Hashanah and the beginning of a new year, I wish all those celebrating a year filled with peace, hope, health and happiness.

May this New Year bring healing to those who are hurting, comfort to those who have lost loved ones, and the hope of a day when families no longer have to live with the fear and devastation of war. May we pray for peace around the world.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.

On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, including more than 400 first responders.

For those of us who remember that day, fear, sadness, courage and resilience remain vivid. With millions of Americans now too young to remember 9/11, it is our responsibility to share our stories and ensure the lives lost are never forgotten.

Please watch my remarks as I reflect on that horrific day in our history.

May God bless all those we lost, their loved ones and everyone whose lives were forever changed.

We will never forget.

It was a very special day in Philadelphia yesterday.

I’m excited to share a few pictures from the historic Pennsylvania House of Representatives session held at Congress Hall in Philadelphia as we continue celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday and Pennsylvania’s important role in America’s story.

The day also included a full-day civic learning experience for students through America250PA. I was pleased to host Brooke Hudak. She was accepted to Keystone Girls State at Shippensburg University. That is a week-long leadership and government simulation program held annually and sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Pennsylvania. She is an outstanding young woman who has many accolades and achievements.

I also hosted Marcia Goodge. Marcia is a student at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center and was a participant in this year’s Distinguished Young Women of Pennsylvania program in New Castle.

It was a pleasure to pose for a photo with Brooke and Marcia’s parents.

Yesterday was a very special day in Philadelphia as I joined my fellow legislators for an historic session at Congress Hall.

There is something powerful about standing in the very room where our nation’s leaders once gathered and where the United States Congress met from 1790 to 1800. Pennsylvania played a foundational role in the birth of our nation, and being there to honor that history was both humbling and inspiring.

This is a remarkable milestone and an opportunity to remember the sacrifices, courage and ideals that shaped the greatest experiment in self-government the world has ever known.

Please watch my thoughts about this outstanding day.
