With Mother’s Day approaching, we want to shine a light on the mothers who are too often forgotten. The ones who were once tiny puppies, adored for being “cute,” only to be discarded when they are no longer useful, profitable, or convenient.

Far too many mama dogs spend their lives producing litter after litter for breeders looking to make quick cash — and when their bodies are tired and the puppies stop selling, they are abandoned, dumped, or passed around like they never mattered. But they do matter. They feel fear, confusion, loneliness, and heartbreak just like any living being.

Earlier this week, a sweet girl now named Katniss by the staff at the Prince George's County Animal Shelter was reported wandering alone at a dog park early in the morning. Katniss was safely picked up and brought back to the station, where she was scanned for a microchip, but none was found. We may never know who left her behind or why, but purposely abandoning an animal is cruel and unacceptable.

To whoever may recognize or be missing this sweet girl, please call us at 301-459-0142. We understand life can become difficult, but abandoning an animal without care or a plan is never the answer.

And to our community: if you see something, say something. If it is safe to do so, take photos of vehicles, license plates, or surrounding details before chasing after an animal or calling for help. That information can save lives.

This Mother’s Day, remember: motherhood does not end when the puppies grow up. These dogs are not disposable once they stop being “cute.” Every mother deserves safety, compassion, and love — including the ones who cannot speak for themselves. 🐾💕

Happy Administrative Professionals Day! 💙

Today we want to give a huge thank you to our incredible administration team, Miss Ortiz and Mrs. Marlowe. You are truly the backbone of the New Carrollton Police Department, and we honestly don’t know what we would do without you.

Thank you for everything you do behind the scenes, for helping our Animal Control Division run smoothly each month, and for always stepping up and lending a hand whenever it’s needed. Your dedication, hard work, and support do not go unnoticed—we appreciate you more than words can say!

Plush toys & happy pups 🐾

While out around the city, we’ve been approaching dogs and their owners during walks to hand out plush toys and share a little joy. It’s been great getting to meet so many friendly faces—both pups and their humans! Thank you to Prince George's County Animal Shelter for sharing these toys with us so we can spread a little extra happiness along the way.

This has been a great way to engage with our community, build relationships, and create trust through simple, positive interactions. It’s been fun connecting with so many of you, and we’re looking forward to meeting many more friends in the future.

Friendly reminder to always use a leash and clean up after your pup while on walks—let’s keep our city safe and clean for everyone! 🐶

Every day, pets and wildlife share our parks, sidewalks, and neighborhoods—and litter puts them at serious risk.

Broken glass can cut paws.
Chicken bones can choke dogs.
Food waste can harm wildlife.

📸 Pictures shown:
• Trash and food waste found throughout the city
• A trash bin located on Carrollton Parkway—one of many available throughout the city for proper disposal
• Two geese relaxing at Beckett Field who could be potentially harmed by slices of bread
• Mambo and Julia out on a walk with their responsible owners

Please throw away your trash and secure your waste.
If you wouldn’t litter in your home, don’t do it outdoors.

From your friends at the New Carrollton PD Animal Control Division—Mambo, Julia, and the two geese are here to tell you: STOP LITTERING! 🐾🌎

🌍🐾 Happy World Spay Day! 🐾🌍

Today we want to give a shoutout to responsible pet ownership! While out on patrol, we had the pleasure of seeing Star and Saint enjoying a walk with their responsible owner. We stopped to grab a quick photo to help remind our community that all pets — dogs and cats — must be on a leash. Pets are not permitted to free roam, and yes, this includes cats.

Not only are Star and Saint safely walked on a leash, but their owner has also taken the important step of having them spayed and neutered. Spaying and neutering helps reduce overpopulation, prevents certain health issues, and supports a safer community for animals.

Please be mindful of your animal and human neighbors. Not everyone is pet-friendly — sometimes due to fear, allergies, or medical reasons.

Fines for pets found off leash start at $50. Pets may also be impounded and transported to the shelter, where they can be exposed to illnesses. Reclaim fees can exceed $100.

Let’s continue working together to keep our community safe, respectful, and pet-friendly. 🐶🐱
