This week, Mayor Phelecia Nembhard raised the Caribbean American Flag in recognition of Caribbean American Heritage Month.

Joined by residents and the Multicultural Commission of Prince George’s County, we celebrated the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions that strengthen and enrich our community.

As we raised the flag, we honored the legacy of remarkable Caribbean Americans, including Bob Marley, whose music inspired unity and hope around the world; Shirley Chisholm, a pioneering force in American politics; and Sidney Poitier, whose groundbreaking achievements opened doors for generations to come. Their stories reflect the creativity, resilience, and determination that define the Caribbean spirit.

Caribbean American Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the lasting impact of Caribbean Americans in public service, education, business, the arts, and countless other fields.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special celebration as we honored the contributions of Caribbean Americans.

Heat Advisory Thursday and Friday: Stay Safe During Extreme Temperatures

Residents are encouraged to take precautions as a period of dangerous heat and humidity is expected to impact our area today and tomorrow. Temperatures combined with high humidity may create heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Please remember to:
• Keep a reusable water bottle with you and make hydration a priority throughout the day.
• Spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
• Schedule outdoor activities during the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.
• Wear light-colored, lightweight clothing and use sunscreen when outdoors.
• Take frequent breaks in shaded areas if working or exercising outside.
• Use window coverings or fans at home to help reduce indoor heat buildup.
• Be aware of heat-related illness symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headache, and fatigue.
• Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone who may need assistance during hot weather.
• Ensure pets have access to fresh water and a cool place to rest.
