Heading into a new week, don’t forget: LOCK IT OR LOSE IT. Our department continues to investigate vehicle break-ins and stolen vehicles occurring both during the day and at night, where vehicles are being left unlocked and often with the keys inside.

Follow these tips to help prevent crime and we encourage you to share this information with others! We often talk to people who have no idea this happens in New Canaan. We try to share this information in a variety of formats, but we can’t reach everyone without your help.

Honoring Our Fallen Heroes – National Police Week

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress, this week serves as a time to honor the courageous men and women in law enforcement who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty to protect and serve their communities.

As we observe National Police Week, the New Canaan Police Department solemnly remembers the lives and service of two of our own, lost in the line of duty.

Chief Constable Louis Drucker
End of Watch: January 25, 1888

Chief Constable Drucker was shot and killed while responding to a complaint of illegal alcohol sales at a residence on Seminary Street. Confronted by a bootlegger, he was fatally wounded in the chest. His bravery and dedication to the community remain a part of our department’s proud history.

Officer James Martin
End of Watch: July 24, 1991

Officer Martin tragically lost his life after coming into contact with a downed electrical wire while responding to a call about a stranded motorist and fallen trees on Valley Road. His selfless response to help others during a hazardous situation exemplifies the spirit of service that defines our profession.

Let us reaffirm our commitment to never forget the ultimate sacrifice these officers made, and to honor their memories by continuing to serve with integrity, courage, and compassion.
