New California driver’s licenses and ID cards will now feature a fresh design that highlights our state’s iconic redwoods, poppies, and coastline along with next-generation security technology to better protect against counterfeiting.

-Current licenses/IDs remain valid until they expire.
-New cards include enhanced security elements, a digital security signature, and will no longer use a magnetic strip.

The last major redesign was in 2010, with changes in 2018 for REAL ID. This update keeps California at the forefront of safety and innovation.

As SCDMV issues new license, permit and ID designs, customers will still apply for them in person at local SC branches, presenting any required documentation and completing applicable testing.

However, under the new process, customers will receive temporary driving or identification certificates valid for driving, voting, and other uses while awaiting their permanent cards to arrive by U.S. mail. Existing cards will be returned to customers with a hole punched through them and may continue to serve as temporary photo identification where accepted.
