The Center on the American Governor seeks to promote research and discussion on the role of the governor in the United States . The Program is building an extensive virtual archive and plans to sponsor a range of academic activities and public forums on topics and issues relating to the office of governor across the country as well as the administrations of selected holders of the office in New Je

rsey and other states. These virtual archives include videotaped interviews with governors, their cabinet officials, legislators, and others who worked with them. Also available are biographical materials, photographs, memoranda, speeches, and documents highlighting campaign moments, policy debates and decisions for each governor. This Web site provides access to various resources relating to the office of the governor, including

•an overview of the evolution of the historical role of governors;
•news on politics, publications, events and other developments affecting governors;
•research and scholarly publications on constitutional, political and policy issues;
•events, such as conferences, seminars and other programs of interest;
•a profile of the history of the New Jersey governor, including a list and biographical sketches of those who have served as governor since colonial times;
•links to other resources. Finally, Rutgers plans to extend the Program’s reach nationally to conduct research and convene forums comparing the approaches of selected governors from multiple stateson cross-cutting issues such as disaster response, education or government reform.

The Center on the American Governor at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University sends our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of the late former New Jersey Governor James J. Florio.

During his term, Florio worked to pass landmark policies on the environment, energy, health and welfare, urban economic development, education funding, and gun control. Florio served as governor from 1990 to 1994 and was at the center of New Jersey public and civic life throughout the years that followed.

The life and legacy of Governor James J. Florio is chronicled at the Center on the American Governor’s online archive. https://governors.rutgers.edu/governor-james-j-florio-archive/

The Eagleton Center on the American Governor (ECAG) at Rutgers University—New Brunswick released a new video interview as part of its Governor Jon S. Corzine Archive.

In the interview, Governor Corzine discusses his decision to leave the financial world and transition into public service first as a U.S. Senator and then as governor of New Jersey.

“I think what I’m most proud of is that we kept track of that objective of equity and opportunity in how we tried to govern. It wasn't just in one area, it was across the board. We really tried to do that with integrity."

Highlights from the video include discussions about:

- Public service
- State budget and finance
- Infrastructure
- Police and prison reform
- Youth services and the foster care system
- Working with other state governments and the federal government

As we turn our election attention to , there will be plenty of gubernatorial races to follow. Thirty-six states will hold gubernatorial elections. Here, POLITICO takes a look at some of the potential close races.

Kathy Hochul was sworn in overnight as New York's first woman governor.

She is the 45th woman governor in U.S. history and the 9th currently serving.

9/50 is the highest number of women governors, but it's a record first set in 2004 that hasn't budged in nearly two decades.

In Virginia, Republicans selected their candidate in early May in “a socially distanced” convention. The party picked Glenn Youngkin, former CEO of the Carlyle Group, who does not have prior elected experience.

VA Democrats, meanwhile, held their primary on June 8. Former Governor Terry McAuliffe won the nomination. McAuliffe served as governor from 2014-1018. While VA limits its governor to one term at a time, former governors can run for the office again after sitting a term (or more) out.

It officially feels like summer in New Jersey and sure enough—primary season is over. Only two states—NJ and Virginia—are holding gubernatorial elections in 2021 (in addition to a likely recall election in California) and the field is set in both.

Here in NJ, incumbent Governor Phil Murphy ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination. He will be vying for his second term in November. He will face Republican nominee, former Assemblyperson Jack Ciattarelli.

Watch ECAG historian Kristoffer Shields interview Rutgers-Eagleton Poll director Ashley Koning about how the pandemic can impact the New Jersey gubernatorial election this November.

“Things have been so politicized in a hyper-partisan & hyper-polarized national environment…The open door for
Jack Ciattarelli would be looking at & critiquing the actions Murphy has taken during the pandemic…[The pandemic] is ongoing, which for a politician, leaves room for mistakes.”

The 19th News interviewed Center for American Women and Politics Senior Scholar and Rutgers University Professor Kira Sanbonmatsu about gubernatorial elections and women running for governor.

"I don’t think that people fully understand the extent of women’s underrepresentation as governors... If governors are seeking reelection, and they’re likely to win, that’s going to return mostly male governors... So it is absolutely a vicious cycle,” said Sanbonmatsu.

In the face of backlash, state lawmakers pulled a bill one hour before it came up for a vote that would have ended the state's COVID-19 public health emergency, but allowed Gov. Phil Murphy to keep 15 executive orders.
