New Britain Democrats Join us as we work to inspire hope for a better future in New Britain, Connecticut.

"We Democrats believe in a government strong enough to use words like 'love' and 'compassion' and smart enough to convert our noblest aspirations into practical realities...We believe that while survival of the fittest may be a good working description of the process of evolution, a government of humans should elevate itself to a higher order." --Mario Cuomo, 1984.

Statement from the New Britain Democratic Town Committee:

The New Britain Republican Town Committee should be ashamed of itself. Instead of offering solutions or focusing on the real challenges facing our city, they have once again chosen political bullying, personal attacks, and manufactured outrage. Their baseless lawsuit and public smear campaign drove away a resident who was willing to step forward and serve the people of New Britain. That is not leadership, it is cowardice.

This is the same tired playbook we have seen before: create chaos, spread misinformation, and hope people ignore the serious issues surrounding the prior administration, including the ongoing questions about misconduct involving the former Mayor and the former Tax Collector. The people of New Britain deserve answers and accountability, not distractions designed to change the subject.

While Republicans focus on political games, Democrats are focused on delivering for residents by fighting for stronger schools, safer neighborhoods, honest government, and a city that works for everyone. No amount of noise from the New Britain Republican Town Committee will change that.

Thank you Mayor Bobby Sanchez for leading with integrity and honesty while addressing many of the issues residents have been concerned about for years!

The New Britain Republican Town Committee’s attempt to exploit the closure of Stanley Black & Decker’s hand tools plant for partisan gain is as disappointing as it is predictable. From day one, Republicans have chosen to attack every action of the new administration and blame Mayor Bobby Sanchez for every challenge facing our city, regardless of the facts.

Stanley Black & Decker’s own statement makes clear that this decision was driven by “a structural decline in demand for single-sided tape measures,” not by local politics. To suggest that a three-month-old municipal administration somehow caused a Fortune 500 company to restructure product lines is simply false.

This is a serious moment for the workers and families impacted. It deserves honesty and leadership, not political grandstanding. Our focus remains where it belongs: supporting affected employees, working with state and regional partners on economic development, and building a diversified, forward-looking economy for New Britain’s future.

Thank you, Mayor Bobby Sanchez, for your leadership!

Thank you, Mayor Bobby Sanchez, for your leadership!

As we mark our first three months in office, I want to share both progress and challenges as we work together to move our city forward.

We’ve faced one of the heaviest snowfalls in the past decade, navigated and are recovering from a cyberattack, and began rebuilding our systems stronger and more secure. Through it all, city operations have stayed functional—streets have been plowed, trash has been picked up, emergencies have been responded to, and taxes have been paid. We are also cleaning up operations at City Hall, improving efficiency, and conducting ongoing audits and investigations to ensure accountability and transparency.

At the same time, we’re laying a stronger foundation not just for today, but for the long-term health and success of our city. We’ve met with many community leaders and residents, and those conversations will continue. I’m committed to visiting every ward to meet directly with residents and businesses through my Listening Tour. As additional dates are scheduled, they will be shared publicly.

We’ve also applied for numerous grants and are making progress toward fulfilling key campaign promises, including addressing the 30-year flooding issue on Allen Street and advancing road safety improvements through our state application for safety cameras.

From day one, our administration has prioritized openness and transparency, and that commitment will remain constant.

Together, we are building a stronger future for our city.

There is a special meeting of the Common Council tomorrow, February 18 at 7:00 PM at City Hall to consider the removal of Alderman Robert Smedley.

Following the unexpected passing of Alderman Jerrell Hargraves, Alderman Smedley (posting as Colin Rober) made unfounded and dangerous accusations against specific staff in the Mayor’s Office and attacked a resident who questioned his statements. These actions are unbecoming of an elected official and are inappropriate for a school district employee who interacts with our children. He should be removed.

To join us in supporting Council action on this matter, you can:
* Speak in person during public participation (best option)
* Call in to 1-339-209-6176
* Write to the entire Council at [email protected]

The New Britain Democratic Party mourns the sudden passing of Alderman Jerrell Hargraves. As an Alderman and the City’s Human Rights Officer, Jerrell was a dedicated public servant and a steadfast advocate for fairness, dignity, and justice. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who are grieving this profound loss.

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Alderman Jerrell Hargraves.

Jerrell devoted his life to serving the City of New Britain and the people he loved. For more than a decade, he served as an Alderman and was a thoughtful, principled, and tireless advocate for our community. He also dedicated over 21 years as a City employee, including serving as Human Rights & Opportunities Officer since 2018, where his commitment to equity, dignity, and fairness left a lasting impact.

Beyond City Hall, Jerrell gave generously of his time as a board member of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain and the New Britain Public Library, always working to strengthen the institutions that make our city more inclusive and compassionate.

Jerrell’s love for New Britain and his belief in public service will be remembered for years to come. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. Additional details regarding services and opportunities to honor his legacy will be shared as they become available.

Thank you, Mayor Bobby Sanchez, for your leadership through this incident and for keeping residents informed!

Earlier this week, the City of New Britain experienced a cybersecurity incident impacting portions of our network.

I want to be very clear and reassure residents: public safety services remain fully operational. Emergency response has not been interrupted, and essential City services continue to be delivered. Every possible step is being taken to limit any impact on residents, businesses, and City operations.

In the early morning hours on Wednesday, the New Britain Police Department identified a network disruption. Once notified, the City immediately activated its established cybersecurity and incident-response protocols. My office promptly contacted state and federal partners, and we engaged outside cybersecurity experts to assist with the investigation and recovery.

I can confirm that the City of New Britain was the victim of a ransomware attack. We are actively investigating the incident and working carefully to restore affected systems. Our teams are working around the clock, and based on current assessments, we anticipate beginning to bring certain systems back online this weekend, with continued progress thereafter.

The City takes this matter extremely seriously. We are working closely with state and federal authorities and cybersecurity professionals to secure our systems, protect information, and ensure a full and responsible recovery.

My office will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and as the investigation progresses.
