If you believe in creating a welcoming, inclusive Seguin where our LGBTQIA+ community and allies can celebrate safely, we need your voice!!

Riverside Pride is headed to the upcoming Seguin City Council meeting tomorrow evening, and we know there will be opposition there. Our goal is to meet that opposition head-on—not with anger, but with Love, Positivity, and the Facts about what our festival is truly about.

How you can help:

Show Up: Fill the room with a visible, supportive presence.

Speak Up: Public comment is limited to 5 minutes per person. If you feel called to speak, start gathering your words now! Let’s keep our message focused on community, unity, and truth!!

Get there at 5pm to find you a seat as they fill up quickly; council meeting starts promptly at 5:30pm.

Let’s show Seguin what Riverside Pride is all about. See you there! 🤝✨

June is a special month for the advancement of civil rights and civil liberties in the US. During June, we commemorate both Pride and Juneteenth.

Pride is in June because the Stonewall riots occurred on June 28, 1969, and that was the catalyst for the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement. Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19, when the Emancipation Proclamation was finally enforced in Texas.

At Let’s Talk Canyon Lake on June 9, we had a discussion on the current state of LGBTQ+ rights, and the bills that were passed in the Texas Legislature to undermine the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

Juneteenth will be commemorated by the City of New Braunfels and the New Braunfels MLK Association at Fischer Park on Saturday, June 20th, from 9 am–12. This is a non-partisan event.

Both Pride and Juneteenth are important because, as Democrats, we believe that all people are created equal and that the United States is a multicultural democracy. We all deserve the same civil rights, civil liberties, voting rights, and equal opportunity.

Science helped eliminate screwworm in the 60s, but science got DOGEd last year. Vote for a scientist this fall and let’s restore life-saving research.

A few nights ago I visited Gillespie County, one of the four Texas counties with confirmed screwworm. I met a rancher who shared that when she was little, her family’s livestock were devastated by the last screwworm outbreak. She recalled an elder being up for three days straight trying to save their animals and weeping at all that was lost. She said one of their horses came up to the house to peer through the window, and half of its face was covered in flies that were dripping off of its flesh.

I asked her to share her story with the crowd, and I shared my own – as a biologist who happened to use the same sterile male technique in my graduate studies as that used to eradicate the screwworm. Today, I learned that technique was created right here in our district in Kerrville! (Shout out to Louis Amestoy at the The Kerr County Lead for the article linked in the comments.)

Why we are seeing a resurgence of this eradicated species? The answer is simple: we got screwed by Trump and DOGE.

Last year, they dismantled USAID and cut the research funding and staffing behind screwworm monitoring and prevention — leaving the U.S. less prepared to respond.” It’s as though they said “Well the car is running fine, why would we need any oil changes?”

They are continuing these assaults – by reorganizing and gutting the USDA that helps combat the screwworm and keep our food supply safe. These shortsighted moves harm farmers, rural communities, and the public at large.

Our government is like a hammer – it can be used to build things, or it can be used to break things. It’s all a matter of who you hand it to.

This November, let’s hand it to people committed to building things – like monitoring programs that keep us safe, research that keeps us fed, and quality public schools so that we can connect the dots.
