Su***de impacts people of all ages including older adults. An important first step in preventing su***de is knowing the warning signs. There are certain behaviors that can indicate an older adult is thinking about self-harm. These include:
🔹 Loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy
🔹 Giving away beloved items or changing their will
🔹 Avoiding social activities
🔹 Neglecting self-care, medical regimens, and grooming
🔹 Exhibiting a preoccupation with death
🔹 Lacking concern for personal safety

Jessica Ellen Boice, 72, a professional artist from Warren County submitted her watercolor painting titled “Lily, Leek, Leek, Leaves” to the Older Artists of PA Showcase.

Jessica says this about her painting, “My work is a glimpse into how I interpret the natural world through the medium of watercolor. My submitted painting of a trout lily "in situ" is from a photo I took last year when foraging ramps/wild leeks by the Conewango Creek. Its title came to me as an homage to John Singer Sargent ("Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose") and my piece represents to me the ephemeral beauty of Spring's emergence.”

Older adults are increasingly being targeted by financial fraud, including impersonation scams, phishing emails, and other schemes designed to steal personal and financial information.

To help protect this vulnerable population from online scams, the Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office, is hosting a virtual workshop on cybercrime prevention.

Speakers will include Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, David Shallcross of the Elder Abuse Unit, Mary Bach, Consumer Issues Task Force Chair of AARP PA, Rick Cimakasky, representing the PA Bankers Association and VP Bank Fraud & Security Officer with Penn Community Bank and former FBI Special Agent, and the Pennsylvania State Police.

Designed for older adults, caregivers, family members, and anyone who supports seniors, this informative session will provide practical tips for recognizing online threats, protecting against financial scams, safeguarding personal information, and knowing what steps to take if you or a loved one becomes the victim of fraud.

SCAM OF THE DAY: TECH SUPPORT FRAUD.

Out of nowhere, you receive a call or a screen pops up on your computer – maybe from a reputable company like Microsoft or an anti-virus company. They tell you that you have a virus or an error, and they can fix it before you lose all of your data. But first, you have to call the number on your screen allow them access to your computer, and/or pay them a sum of money. Sometimes they will use a “scan” of your computer to try to convince you there is something wrong. Don’t believe them!

Don’t give access to your computer! If you do, the scammer can look on your computer for your personal or financial information, or add malware that really will infect your computer, or add spyware so they can get your information in the future.

Instead, you can try exiting the internet, restarting your computer, or manually pressing the “off” button. Or try contacting a reputable source for help. Be careful though when searching for businesses on the internet – sometimes illegitimate services have paid for ads that might lead you to think they are the real thing!
Remember: real tech support or other computer companies don’t just contact you out of the blue.
