We’re excited to share this recent project with you! 🌸🐝🌾

In partnership with Spring Township, the Perry County Conservation District awarded funds from the Countywide Action Plan Implementation Block Grant for a lawn to meadow conversion project at Lynn Sheaffer Dum Memorial Park.

This native meadow habitat was installed in May and the first year plants are doing great! What you see growing now are cover crops and annual flowers (zinnias and cosmos). These plants will protect the native seeds through the summer and help provide stability in the soil. Next year, we will start to see native plants developing from their seeds!

It will take up to five years for the native plants in this meadow to be established. Once the native plants start to grow, they will offer a variety of blooms for us (and the pollinators) to enjoy!

Below the meadow, near the pavilions, a formal garden area was also installed which is filled with native plants already blooming!

Thank you to Spring Township and Friends of Spring Township for supporting this project!

The Countywide Action Plan Implementation Block Grant is provided by the PA Department of the Environment. This grant program aims to support project implementation to maximize nutrient and sediment reduction goals in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Happy PA Native Species Day! 🌸

To celebrate, we are featuring mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), the Pennsylvania state flower! This beautiful shrub blooms in the late spring and has a unique pollination method. 🐝

Each flower has ten white, thread-like filaments that curl back from the center of the bloom towards the edge into pockets (where the dark pink spots are). When a pollinator lands on the flower, these filaments are triggered to release from their pockets and spring forward, flinging a clump of pollen with them. This pollen lands on the insect and will be carried off to the next flower with them!

Soon, mountain laurel will bloom along the woodlands throughout Perry County! Keep an eye out for this amazing native shurb!
