Load ratings on life-safety gear can be confusing. NFPA 1983 tells us the Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) of ropes, which is a static number. But what happens in a real rescue? Falls and mechanical advantage systems create dynamic loads that can be far higher than the MBS. It’s vital for rescue technicians to understand the difference between static strength and the forces they'll encounter. This knowledge helps make sure rigging is safe and equipment is chosen correctly for the job.
