New Bern, NC is where we call home and the historical Rhem house is where we live. Life has been busy for me so sorry for the delay in the stories.
Last I left off we were in the basement. There are so many stories about this area so I will keep on this theme.
While exploring the basement I noticed an old brick outcropping poking out of the fill dirt that resembled a small box. It seemed out of place in a pile of dirt so I did what any curious person would have done, I stuck my hand in the hole to see what was in there. To my surprise my outstretched fingertips could trace out a dome feature that seemed to be some sort of structure. Without hesitation I knew digging the top dirt was the next step so we could see what the object was. As we peeled each layer of earth away a dome top started appearing revealing an old cistern well, some artifacts and what would be the start of whispering voices coming from the dark corners of the basement.

Lets get back to the stories by diving into what is possibly the spookiest part of the house, the basement. The Rhem house basement is not your traditional living space. Think of it as of an existing building with the Rhem house placed on top. Complete with ancient brick walls, rooms, fireplaces and a cistern well.
The first time I ventured into the dark and dank basement I saw something that stopped me cold in my tracks. Sitting on a ledge was a series of objects all facing out towards the opening of the basement. I instantly recognized them as a hex so when I got closer it became clear that one of the past tenants used a form of magic to keep something in the basement from getting into the main house. Turns out that one of the many rumors of the Rhem house was that it housed a witch coven at one point. It is a space where eyes and shadows seem to follow your every move and soon we would discover that what is down there was not afraid to talk.

The first story focuses on the main staircase. It began late one evening with a phone call when I was on a business trip close to Chicago. The conversation began with a normal amount of small talk until my wife couldn't hold back anymore. She told me one late night she was headed up one of the original staircases when faint whispers were filling up the darkened space. At first the voices were barely audible until they weren't. Out of nowhere she clearly heard "she turned out the lights!" It took a minute for her to realize the voices were talking about her turning off the downstairs lamp and plunging the foyer into darkness. In disbelief, she is on the verge of panic of hearing a voice that has no body. The next day she began researching about the history of New Bern and found out that there is a tradition of a light being kept on all the time for the dead. Ever since then a lamp has been on in honor of that but that was the start of what would become a house that feels alive, and the dead never leave.
The next chapter is my first trip to the basement.

Ok everyone, who is familiar with the Rhem house? It's been around 4 years since I opened the door for the first time. No one had lived in it for a while but right off the bat there were candles all over the place on the first floor. Some in a circle, some put in corners, it gave the place a surreal feeling but the house itself always felt inviting. It wouldn't be long before my family had their first encounter with a host of voices that wanted to be heard. This chapter is called Turning the Lights Out.
