Craven County is honored to welcome the Military Order of the Purple Heart during their 93rd Annual Convention taking place at the Riverfront Convention Center.

Craven County is home to the third highest veteran population in North Carolina, including around 200 Purple Heart recipients. We salute these valiant men and women and honor their service and the sacrifice of their loved ones.

As part of this important gathering, Craven County and the Military Order of the Purple Heart Down East Chapter 639 are hosting a Remembrance Ceremony open to the public on July 16 at 1:30 PM at the Craven County Administration Building. It will honor the courage, sacrifice, and devotion of our combat‑wounded veterans. The ceremony will include remarks, wreath presentations, a 21‑gun salute, and taps.

In an NPR piece, Congressman Chris Pappas discusses his bill and efforts to rein in claim sharks. Our work continues.

"It's crazy what these guys are trying to get away with," Pappas told NPR. "To use a robo-dialer to make multiple calls to government lines and then just send veterans a bill whenever their eligibility has changed, it's just outrageous."

We’re pleased to share that the Children of Wartime Veterans Scholarship application portal is now open for Fall 2026.

The portal will remain open through June 8, 2026, so that awards can be announced before classes begin in August.

National County Government Month Highlight 10 - Veterans Services

Craven County Veteran Services provides services and referrals so Veterans, dependents, and survivors can apply for and receive benefits for which they are entitled.

The department helps Veterans apply for and receive disability benefits and pensions, connects dependents and survivors with benefits, helps Veterans receive educational and healthcare benefits, and connects Veterans to a variety of other programs and benefits such as home loans, burial and grave markers, property tax exclusions, license plates, and more.

Nearly 15% of Craven County's population are Veterans. Veterans Services stands ready to assist them and their families.
