Today, the New Bern Police Department remembers and honors the heroes and innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years ago, our nation faced unimaginable tragedy, but we also witnessed the true definition of bravery, unity, and resilience. We will never forget the ultimate sacrifices made by the 343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, 8 paramedics, and thousands of innocent citizens.

To our New Bern community, thank you for standing strong with us then and now. Today, we pause, we reflect, and we promise to

๐ŸŽ’โœจHigh-fives, flashing lights, and a whole lot of school spirit! ๐Ÿš“๐Ÿš’

This week, members of the New Bern Police Department and New Bern Fire-Rescue rose early to welcome our elementary students back to campus. Our crews were thrilled to greet students and families during the morning drop-off window!

We had an absolute blast kicking off the new school year with the future leaders at each of these fantastic schools:
J.T. Barber Elementary School
Oaks Road Academy
Ben D. Quinn Elementary School
Trent Park Elementary School
Creekside Elementary School

From helping to unload buses to exchanging fist bumps and smiles at the front doors, our first responders loved being part of this exciting milestone. Our top priority is making sure our young learners feel safe, supported, and energized to learn.

A huge thank you to the incredible teachers, administrators, parents, and students who made us feel so welcome. Letโ€™s make this a safe, successful, and amazing school year! ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽ

New Bern Noble Knights Chess Club Kicks Off September 14th

The New Bern Police Department is excited to kick off our 10th session of the New Bern Noble Knights Chess Club. Beginning Monday, September 14, 2026, weekly chess sessions will be held at West New Bern Recreation Center, 1225 Pinetree Drive, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

The New Bern Noble Knights Chess Club is designed to build and maintain strong relationships with our youth community while having fun. The club offers 12 weeks of coaching, mentoring, and team building alongside police department staff and certified chess instructors. All skill levels are welcome to join, and parents are encouraged to accompany their kids through the program so they can play chess together at home.

Participants will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from experienced chess instructors and to play matches against members of the New Bern Police Department. The program is free to join, and no prior chess experience is required. While it is especially ideal for middle school students, we welcome all
interested students to sign up and take part.

If you are interested in participating in the New Bern Noble Knights Chess Club, visit the Youth Outreach Program page on our website at:

https://www.newbernnc.gov/departments/police_department/youth_outreach_program.php

Those who are interested in participating can download the application from the New Bern Police Departmentโ€™s website and drop it off at the New Bern Police Department at 601 George Street, New Bern. All questions can be directed to Sergeant T. Fisher at ([email protected]) or 252-672-4135.
