Heavy Rain Reminder: Help your Sump Pump Do Its Job

With the significant rainfall we've been experiencing, our storm water conveyance system can become overwhelmed very quickly. When that happens, sump pumps connected to buried discharge lines (especially those tied into storm sewers or ditches) may not be able to keep up.

What you can do:
* Make sure your sump pump discharges above ground during heavy rain events.
* Direct the water at least 10 feet away from your foundation.
* Check that your discharge line is clear and flowing freely.

Discharging above ground during peak rain helps ensure your system can keep moving water away from your home and reduces the risk of basement backups.

Please see the graphic below for a quick visual explanation.

Stay safe and thank you for taking steps to protect your property and help our system function effectively.

Around 3am Monday 12/29/2025, 20+ New Berlin DPW plow/salters were deployed to begin the lengthy operation to treat the city roads.
The earlier rain, gusty winds, and low temperatures can make driving hazardous. Please use extra caution approaching intersections, hills and making turns.
When you encounter plow/salters, please give them plenty of room to work.

🍁 Keep Leaves Out of the Street - Protect Our Stormwater System! πŸ‚
From the City of New Berlin - DCD Water Resources Management Utility

As a reminder to residents: The City of New Berlin does NOT provide curbside leaf pickup. Please do not rake or blow leaves into the street. When leaves accumulate in roadways, they:
πŸ”Έ Clog storm drains and cause localized flooding
πŸ”Έ Add excess nutrients to waterways, harming water quality
πŸ”Έ Create slippery, unsafe road conditions
πŸ”Έ Increase maintenance costs for the community

Instead, keep leaves on your property and put them to good use:

βœ”οΈ Compost them for garden beds
βœ”οΈ Mulch them with your lawn mower for a natural fertilizer

Fall leaves are a free resource - let’s keep them out of the streets and out of our stormwater system.
