In the early morning hours of Monday, June 22, officers arrested a suspect after assisting the City of Fall River Police Department in locating a wanted man who had allegedly made violent threats, cut off his ankle monitor, and was believed to be in New Bedford.

Throughout the night, officers responded to several locations while attempting to locate the suspect, identified as BRANDON SYLVIA, 30, of ADAMS STREET in New Bedford. SYLVIA was believed to be armed and made threats toward others. Through police investigative efforts, SYLVIA was eventually located in the area of Upton Street.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle he was operating, SYLVIA struck a police cruiser and fled on foot through nearby properties. Following a brief foot pursuit, officers placed him into custody without further incident.

SYLVIA was charged with operating with a suspended or revoked license, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop or yield, leaving the scene of property damage, resisting arrest, and vandalizing property.

In addition, the Fall River PD has sought charges against SYLVIA, including kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, threat to commit a crime, unarmed robbery, trespassing, witness/juror/police intimidation, larceny from a building, stalking, unarmed burglary, and domestic violence-related charges.

If you have any information you would like to give the police, you can do so anonymously by calling 508-99-CRIME or visiting our website and submitting a tip.

Lace up, gear up, and cheer on! The Whaling City Triathlon returns to New Bedford this Sunday, June 28, beginning at 7:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Fort Taber Park. The event will bring hundreds of athletes to the South End and Peninsula area for swimming, biking, and running competitions.

Motorists should expect temporary lane closures, traffic restrictions, and delays throughout the morning, particularly along East Rodney French Boulevard, South Rodney French Boulevard, West Rodney French Boulevard, and surrounding roadways near Fort Taber. The bicycle course will utilize roadways that are closed to traffic during the event.

Residents and visitors traveling to or from the Peninsula are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and seek alternate routes when possible.

Officers and event personnel will be on site to assist with traffic management and help ensure the safety of participants and motorists.

We thank everyone for their patience and cooperation and wish all athletes the best of luck on race day!

The NBPD is advising residents and visitors that enforcement efforts have been increased throughout the City's beachfront and peninsula areas as warmer weather brings larger crowds to local parks, beaches, and recreational spaces.

Over the past three weeks, officers from both the Patrol and Traffic Divisions have conducted more than 140 directed patrols, made 283 traffic stops, and made 10 arrests in the beach and peninsula area. Officers have also responded to numerous disturbance-related calls for service.

Visitors are reminded that these recreational areas are also surrounded by residential neighborhoods. Excessive noise, disorderly behavior, littering, public drinking, illegal fireworks, unauthorized parking, and other violations that spill into the neighborhoods negatively impact the quality of life.

Officers will continue actively enforcing laws and regulations related to loud exhaust, loud music, illegal fireworks, public drinking, littering, disorderly conduct, along with parking and traffic violations.

All city parks, beaches, and associated parking lots have established closing times, and individuals who remain in these areas after closing may be subject to enforcement action.

"Our beaches and parks are great places to enjoy the outdoors in New Bedford. We are asking everyone to enjoy them responsibly and respectfully so that all residents and visitors can have a safe and enjoyable summer,โ€ said Chief Jason Thody. โ€œOur officers will continue to maintain a visible presence and address violations that negatively impact the quality of life in the neighborhoods and everyone's ability to enjoy our recreational locations."

The NBPD is committed to using technology responsibly to enhance public safety and assist in criminal investigations. We recognize that residents may have questions and concerns regarding privacy when it comes to these evolving technologies.

Recently, there have been reports regarding Flock Safetyโ€™s privacy and information-sharing concerns. While Flock Safety has proven to be a valuable investigative tool, the department has implemented strict controls governing data sharing, access, and oversight to ensure the technology is used responsibly and is consistent with Massachusetts and Federal laws.
