Yesterday September 13th, 2026, at approximately 1820 hours New Bedford Police Communications center received a call for an elderly male who was actively choking.

New Bedford EMS Medic 2 was dispatched along with New Bedford Fire Department and New Bedford Police Department. EMT Medeiros, Paramedic Touron and Paramedic Desrosiers arrived to find a male with an airway obstruction who was quickly losing his ability to breathe. Due to the teamwork of all involved and quick thinking by our EMS Providers, Paramedic Touron was able to clear the obstruction utilizing a direct visual approach and the Magill Forceps. Upon arrival at the Hospital the patient was awake and able to communicate with EMS and Hospital staff.

Paramedics and EMTs go through rigorous training on airway throughout their initial training and every year thereafter to keep up with the skills that are not often used but matter the most when seconds count.

Thanks to the quick actions of EMT Medeiros, Paramedic Touron, Paramedic Desrosiers and New Bedford Fire Engine Company 6 there is no doubt that a life was saved!

🚒 New Bedford Fire Company Engine 6 — Life-Saving Response

At approximately 1820 hours, New Bedford Fire Company Engine 6 responded to a report of a man choking on Rivet Street.

Engine 6 was first on scene and found the patient actively choking. Crews immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver. The patient then turned gray and stopped breathing, prompting firefighters to begin CPR while continuing efforts to clear the airway.

Medics arrived and quickly boarded the patient into the ambulance. Paramedics used long forceps and a flashlight to locate and remove a large piece of cantaloupe that was obstructing his airway.

Within seconds of the obstruction being removed, the patient regained consciousness and, thankfully, survived.

This was an outstanding example of a great coordinated effort between firefighters and paramedics, working quickly and effectively under extremely critical circumstances. 🚒❤️

🚒 Challenging Rescue on Route 140

Just before midnight, a vehicle lost control while exiting the Kings Highway ramp onto Route 140 North, leaving the roadway and traveling approximately 50 yards deep into the woods.

Engine Company 9 and Ladder Company 4 were faced with thick brush, difficult terrain, and a heavily damaged vehicle. Firefighters used chain saws to cut through the dense vegetation and make their way to the crash.

Once they reached the vehicle, crews deployed the Jaws of Life to extricate the male driver.

Firefighters successfully freed the driver, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was turned over to New Bedford EMS and transported to St. Luke’s Hospital. Massachusetts State Police assisted at the scene.

This rescue was a true team effort, requiring coordination between New Bedford Fire, New Bedford EMS, and Massachusetts State Police to reach and safely remove the driver from the remote crash location.

Great work by all crews involved. 👏🚒

The New Bedford Fire Department invites members of our community to join us on September 11 as we pause to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

At 9:45 a.m., members of the New Bedford Fire Department will assemble outside each of our fire stations in remembrance of the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day, including the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We welcome the public to stand alongside our firefighters at any New Bedford fire station as we honor the victims, their families, and the first responders whose courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Stop by the Christian Fellowship Center, 822 Church Street in New Bedford, on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and have your child’s car seat checked by trained installers from the New Bedford Fire Department and New Bedford Health Department.
