# # # SEPTEMBER 11 — A DAY TO REMEMBER

Some dates become permanently etched into our collective memory.

**September 11, 1851:** In Christiana, Pennsylvania, freedom seekers and their supporters resisted an attempt to capture and return four men who had escaped slavery. The confrontation became known as the **Christiana Resistance**.

Thirty-eight people were eventually charged with treason.

**None were convicted.**

Their story reminds us that Black people were not simply subjects of history. They were people making choices, protecting one another, resisting oppression, and fighting for freedom.

**September 11, 2001:** Another generation experienced a day that changed America forever.

We remember the lives lost.
We remember the first responders.
We remember the families.
We remember the survivors.
We remember the communities forever changed.

# # # **WHY DOES A MUSEUM MATTER?**

Because memory needs a place to live.

Photographs.
Letters.
Clothing.
Toys.
Dolls.
Personal belongings.

Objects can become witnesses to history.

At the **National Black Doll Museum of History & Culture**, we believe a Black doll can be more than a toy.

She can be evidence of childhood.
He can represent a community.
An artist's creation can reveal a dream.
A treasured object can preserve a memory.

And sometimes, a doll can help us ask questions about people whose stories were never fully recorded.

**WHO MADE HER?
WHO LOVED HER?
WHO PLAYED WITH HER?
WHAT DID SHE MEAN TO THEM?**

These are the questions preservation allows us to ask.

Today, we remember.

Today, we reflect.

And today, we recommit ourselves to the work of preserving the stories that might otherwise disappear.

It's almost time for our monthly
Open House on AHA!
Stop by 230 Union Street for some creative fun &
community conversations.
4:30-6:30pm Sketchygoichie and the South East Recovery Learning Community will be in the house with hands-on activities. Plus free wall activation and a creation station.
Followed by Anomaly Poetry Open Mic 7pm-the poems run out.
And of course the house kittens (they turn 1 this month!) will be around for pets and purrs.

Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts, Inc. makes it happen. 🧠⚡️

How many of us left school wishing someone had taught us more about money, careers and what it actually takes to start a business? 💰🎓 Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts is working to make sure thousands of SouthCoast kids don't have to figure all of that out the hard way.

Their programs reach students from pre-K right through young adulthood, focusing on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and career readiness. Some participants have already turned those lessons into full-time jobs and clearer plans for college and careers.
