It is with deep respect and gratitude that we honor the life of former EMT and Firefighter Donald L. Birkner, who passed away on April 25, 2026, just days before his 76th birthday.

Donald dedicated his life to serving others and his community. A founding member of the New Athens Ambulance Service in 1977, he faithfully served for over four decades as an EMT and EMT-Intermediate, providing care, comfort, and professionalism to countless individuals throughout the community in their time of need.

In addition to his EMS service, Donald was a proud member of the New Athens Fire Department from 1969 to 1995, spending more than 25 years protecting his community with courage and commitment. His legacy is one of selfless service, dedication, and compassion.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege to serve alongside him.
Rest easy, Don. You'll never be forgotten!

The NAFD is in the process of completing final inspection on our new $3.1M ladder truck! Reaching 127’ this asset should make rescuing cats from trees a much safer operation. Now we’ll proudly have the tallest ladder in all the land! We would like to thank the generous donors who helped make this purchase possible.

Please come join us at Hanft Park today at 1pm to see the Easter Bunny and to hunt some eggs!!! The egg hunt will start promptly at 1:00, one age group will go at a time for those parents who have multiple children hunting. 🐣 🐰

**ATTENTION RESIDENCE**
There is an emergency shelter that will be opening at 6 pm on 3/16/2026 for individuals who are without electricity and heat at the Bullpen Bar and Grill at 201 Kaskaskia Street New Athens Illinois. Please use the entrance from the Alley. At this time this shelter does not allow pets. Please share with community members who are currently experiencing power outages or heating issues.
