The Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana is aware of recent public comments made by Floyd County Library Board member Ann Carruthers regarding the closure of the Community Corner food pantry at the New Albany Central Library.

We appreciate that Ms. Carruthers recognized the importance of community partners in meeting critical needs. However, we want to gently clarify that the Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana has not committed to operating a food pantry, has not agreed to replace the Community Corner program, and has not been approached by the Floyd County Library Board to serve as a solution for the pantry’s closure.

Food insecurity, housing instability, and homelessness are deeply connected, and the possible loss of any community resource creates real concern for people already facing hardship. We understand why residents are worried, and we share the desire to make sure no one is left without support.

This situation also points to a much broader issue in our community: the growing need for more services, more coordinated support, and a year-round shelter for people experiencing homelessness and housing instability.

One organization, one church, one pantry, or one program cannot fill every gap. Our community needs a stronger safety net, built through collaboration, planning, and real investment.

The Coalition remains committed to collaboration and is willing to be part of thoughtful conversations about how our community responds to this need. At the same time, any transition plan must be based on clear communication, confirmed commitments, and the resources required to serve people well.

We encourage continued dialogue among the Floyd County Library Board, local government, faith communities, nonprofits, and community members so residents who rely on this pantry have accurate information and a path forward.

The Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana will continue focusing on its mission to address homelessness and housing instability while working alongside partners to strengthen the broader safety net for our neighbors.

This weekend, Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana Executive Director Leslea Townsend Cronin graduated from Spalding University with her Doctorate in Social Work and received the Transformational Capstone Award, a tremendous honor, for her research on affordable housing in Southern Indiana.

Transformational is the right word.

Leslea did not pursue this degree simply for a title. She pursued it to strengthen the professional work she is deeply committed to and to help transform the way our region understands housing, homelessness, affordability, and the systems that impact our neighbors every day.

Her capstone research found something important: Southern Indiana cares about housing, but many people still have an outdated understanding of what affordable housing actually means. That gap matters. Leslea’s work helps move the conversation from assumption to understanding, and from understanding to action.

The moment was made even more meaningful as Leslea walked across the stage wearing her father’s graduation robes, adding a deeply personal layer to an already powerful achievement.

We are proud to celebrate Leslea, her doctorate, her Transformational Capstone Award, and the heart, expertise, and leadership she continues to bring to our organization.

Congratulations, Dr. Leslea Townsend Cronin. Southern Indiana is better because of your commitment, and the work ahead is exactly the kind of transformational change our community needs.

Tyson is instrumental to our team and deserves all of the kudos! Thank you for shining a light on him, Thrive RCO. We appreciate the work you do, too. 💙

Shout out to our friend and community partner Tyson 🙌

One thing we see all the time is how hard it can be for someone to finally decide they’re ready for help… and then immediately hit a wall trying to figure out insurance.

Phone calls. Paperwork. Waiting. Confusing answers. It can wear people down fast.

Tyson helps take some of that weight off our participants so they can stay focused on what actually matters: getting into treatment and moving forward. 🫶

A lot of important work happens behind the scenes, and this is definitely one of those things. We appreciate you always being willing to help and showing up for our community 💪

The Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana is in the running this Derby Day!

During Churchill Downs’ Winsday celebration, HCSI was selected in the Charity Post Draw and paired with the #4 post position for today’s Kentucky Derby. That means we have one more reason to cheer when the gates open: The nonprofit paired with the winning post position receives $20,000, with additional prizes awarded for second, third, and fourth through 20th place.

No matter where #4 finishes, HCSI is grateful to Churchill Downs for creating this opportunity to support nonprofits and the work happening every day to help people in our community move toward housing stability. Now, let’s go #4!
