What is New World Screwworm and Why Should We Care?

New World Screwworm is a dangerous pest whose larvae (maggots) feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, including livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, people. Left untreated, infestations can cause severe injury or even death.

While New World Screwworm was eradicated from the United States decades ago, USDA is actively working to prevent its spread and protect animal health through surveillance, education, and rapid response efforts.

Pet owners, livestock producers, hunters, and animal caregivers should be aware of the signs:
✔️ Wounds that do not heal
✔️ Unusual drainage or odor from a wound
✔️ Presence of maggots in or around a wound
