The Story County Sheriff’s Office recently celebrated the graduation of this year’s Citizens Academy participants. Throughout the program, community members had the opportunity to learn about the many roles and responsibilities within the Sheriff’s Office through hands-on demonstrations, realistic scenarios, and discussions with staff from multiple divisions.

Participants also experienced firearm safety and live-fire range training, giving them a better understanding of the training and decision-making involved in law enforcement. We appreciate the time and dedication shown by each participant and thank them for their interest in serving and learning more about their community.

The Ames Fire Department will be conducting live fire training at 210 South Dayton Avenue. The training will be held Saturday, May 9th, weather permitting.

The live fire training will begin around 9 a.m. with several small interior fires. By mid-afternoon firefighters let the structure burn completely and stay on scene until the structure has been reduced to smoldering materials. The remains may smolder for several days until the materials can be safely removed by a hired contractor. Impacts to the surrounding neighborhood are expected to be minimal based on the semi-isolated location of the property. Residents may experience smoke and rusty water in the area, but fire crews will work to minimize any issues.

All live fire training is conducted in accordance with State of Iowa Department of Natural Resources and National Fire Protection Association Standards. Traffic on South Dayton Avenue will remain open during the event.

For questions or concerns, contact Fire Training Officer A.J. Plach at [email protected] or call at 515.239.5107.
