North San Juan Fire Protection District

North San Juan Fire Protection District Serving since 1862, we protect lives, property, and the environment. Our dedicated volunteers respond with pride, keeping our community safe for over 160 years.

We are the oldest volunteer fire department in Nevada County. The department began serving the town of North San Juan in 1862, and was incorporated as a Fire Protection District in 1986. Today we cover the largest territory with the smallest budget of all fire districts in Nevada County. The District covers 70 square miles of the San Juan Ridge, including the historic communities of French Corral,

North Columbia and North San Juan. It includes all territory between the South and Middle Yuba Rivers, from Bridgeport in the West to roughly the east entrance to Malakoff Diggins state Park in the East. We provide emergency services for 250 to 300 incidents per year. Like all fire departments, only a little over 10% of our emergency responses are related to fires. Over half of our responses involve medical emergencies, one-fourth are vehicle accidents, and the remainder are other miscellaneous emergencies. About 65% of our calls come from North San Juan or the San Juan Ridge area from Highway 49 to approximately Sages Road. In addition to Medical Aid, Vehicle Accident, Wild Land and Structure Fire Response, the District provides:

Fire Prevention
First Aid Training
Search and Rescue
Hazardous Materials Response
Swiftwater Rescue
Safety and Injury Prevention
Public Assistance
Public Education

At 9:45 last night, your City firefighters were dispatched to a reported residential structure fire involving two trailers in North San Juan.

North San Juan Fire Protection District crews arrived first and confirmed a working fire with both trailers fully involved. Grass Valley Engine 5 and Engine 2 arrived and assisted with fire attack and overhaul operations.

The fire was contained to the involved trailers.

There were no injuries reported.

Last Wednesday, our volunteers participated in a forcible door entry training at CAL FIRE Station 42 on Columbia Hill, which also helps cover our district. We appreciate their partnership and the opportunity to train alongside their crew.

Forcible door entry is a vital skill on the fireground. When seconds count, firefighters must be able to gain access to a structure quickly and with as little damage as possible.

This training focused on using “the irons”, a tool set made up of a Halligan bar and a flat-head axe. When used correctly, the irons allow firefighters to make entry in under 30 seconds, giving them a direct path to extinguish a fire and, most importantly, save lives.

Hands-on training like this builds skill, confidence, and teamwork—core elements of effective emergency response.

Interested in being part of your local fire department?
We invite community members to join us for our Wednesday night trainings. It’s a great way to see what we do, meet the team, and get a feel for what it’s like to serve with the North San Juan Volunteer Fire Department. No experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and community spirit.

We hope to see you there! 🚒🔥

🚫✈ Wildfire airspace is part of the fire line. Keep it clear.

A single UAS (uncrewed aircraft system), such as a drone, can shut down firefighting aerial firefighting operations. Even a small drone poses a huge risk—it can cause a midair collision that could damage an aircraft or even cause it to crash.

When a drone is spotted, firefighting aircraft can be ordered to ground for safety. That means water and retardant drops stop, crews are sidelined, and the fire gains valuable time to spread—threatening homes, communities, and firefighters on the ground.

Flying a drone within 15 miles of smoke columns or where aircraft are scooping water isn’t just illegal—it’s reckless. Your drone could be the reason critical firefighting resources are forced to stand down.

🔥 Ground your drone. Let us do our job—because if you fly, we can’t.

Yesterday, North San Juan Fire responded alongside CAL FIRE, U.S. Forest Service, Pike City Fire, and Camptonville Fire to the Oregon Fire, located near Oregon Creek off Ridge Road and Alleghany Road.

Thanks to rapid coordination and an aggressive air and ground attack—including air tankers, helicopters, engines, water tenders, and hotshot crews—the fire was contained at 6 acres.

📸 Swipe to see our crew on the line and incredible shots of aerial retardant drops that helped stop the fire in its tracks.

We're proud of how quickly all agencies came together to protect our community. Despite difficult terrain and heavy brush, firefighters worked tirelessly into the evening with mop-up operations continuing today.

A huge thank you to everyone involved. We remain staffed and ready as fire weather continues through the weekend. Stay safe, stay alert.
