U.S. Forest Service-Tahoe National Forest

U.S. Forest Service-Tahoe National Forest Tahoe National Forest is one of the most popular forests for recreation in the nation year-round. This U.S.

Forest Service-Tahoe National Forest page is a combined effort of the National Forest Foundation and the USDA Forest Service. The Tahoe National Forest is located northeast of Sacramento in the central Sierra Nevada mountains and extends from near Lake Tahoe to north of the prominent Sierra Buttes. Several highways, including Interstate Highway 80; State Highways 20, 49, 89, and 267; and

Forest roads, provide excellent access to most portions of the Forest. The central Sierra Nevada Mountains offer scenic beauty and an attractive climate that make the area an outstanding year-round center for outdoor recreation. Elevations within the Forest vary from about 1,500 feet in the foothills to over 9,000 feet at the Sierra crest. The National Forest Foundation, chartered by Congress, engages Americans in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193-million-acre National Forest System and administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the National Forests. http://www.nationalforests.org/

The Forest Service manages a system of 155 national forests, 20 national grasslands, and 222 research and experimental forests, as well as other special areas, covering more than 192 million acres of public land. The Forest Service has evolved into a 30,000 employee agency that manages the national forests for a number of multiple uses, including recreation, timber, wilderness, minerals, water, grazing, fish, and wildlife.

💪 We've been working hard to reopen campgrounds and trails for the season.

Before recreation sites can fully open to the public:
🧹 Sites and facilities must be cleaned up after the winter
🚧 Any road damage must be repaired
🌲 Safety hazards such as down trees must be removed and hazardous branches must be mitigated
🚰 Water systems must be tested and repaired if needed

While most campgrounds are now open to the public, we're still working on a few. Be sure to check site status and conditions information 👉https://www.fs.usda.gov/r05/tahoe/recreation.

Last week, Tahoe National Forest fire resources assisted our federal partners at Beale Air Force Base with an approximately 200-acre prescribed fire project.

Prescribed fires help reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.

⚠️Attention Campers: Be Bear Aware!🐻

All of Tahoe National Forest is bear country. Significant bear activity has been reported in recreation areas around Bullards Bar Reservoir. It's important to remember that a fed bear is a dead bear.

Please always:
✅Store food, scented items and garbage in bear-resistant storage lockers when not actively being used.
✅Always properly close food storage lockers even when they are empty.
✅Discard any food that cannot be stored in bear-resistant lockers.
✅Do not eat or drink in your tent, and do not sleep in clothing you have worn while cooking.
✅Dispose of trash in bear-resistant dumpsters and make sure it is properly secured.

❗Public Safety Alert ❗

Wildfire risk reduction projects ongoing across Camptonville, Downieville and surrounding communities

Work to improve forest health and reduce the risk of wildfire in the North Yuba River watershed is ongoing as part of efforts by the North Yuba Forest Partnership. Project work may potentially impact access to popular recreation locations and Forest Service lands within the Tahoe National Forest area near Camptonville, Downieville and surrounding communities. For public safety, access may be restricted to Forest Service roads, trails and lands as contractors engage in active implementation this field season.

The public should expect an increase in log trucks on the highway and roads designated as haul routes (see map). In addition, the public is encouraged to avoid project areas due to mechanical vegetation management work, which includes the use of heavy equipment, movement of haul trucks, tree-falling operations, mastication and piling. Log trucks and equipment may be present seven days a week at any time.
