Recycling personal information (documents, bank statements, medical records) is a bad idea because it places sensitive data into unsecured streams accessible to thieves. Once in the recycling bin, you lose control of the information, enabling risks such as identity theft, dumpster diving, and privacy breaches

Fireworks should never be placed in recycling because they are a major fire hazard and contain hazardous, non-recyclable materials. Used fireworks can smolder for hours, risking fires in trucks or facilities. They contain unexploded, toxic chemicals and heavy metals—such as barium and strontium—that contaminate recycling batches.

How to properly dispose of Fireworks: Soak all fireworks (including "duds") in a bucket of water for at least 15 minutes, but preferably overnight, to ensure they are completely extinguished. Once fully soaked, place them in a plastic bag and dispose of them in your normal household trash.

Putting hazardous waste in your recycling bin is dangerous because it can cause fires or explosions in trucks, release toxic chemicals into the environment, and harm sanitation workers. These items (batteries, paints, chemicals) require special, separate disposal to prevent contaminating recycling streams, damaging equipment, and leaching toxins into soil and water.
Please call to make an appointment (906) 249-4125 to drop off your hazardous waste. For Marquette County Residents, this is free and quite easy.
