The Nederland election officials found that 10 of the provisional ballots in the May 3 election were cast by eligible voters, so they were opened and counted.

The new totals that the outgoing Nederland City Council will canvass at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 12 are:

Jeff Darby 1,178, or 58.46%
Emmett Hollier 837, or 41.54%

The three victors will be sworn-in immediately after the outgoing Council passes the resolution accepting the results. This is a formality; the Council cannot overturn the election.

I will be sworn in at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at City Hall, 207 N. 12th Street.

So far this week, I have spoken with outgoing Mayor Don Albanese, interim City Manager Cheryl Dowden, and my new colleagues on City Council. These conversations will continue.

While at City Hall on Monday, I met most of the fine people who work at City Hall. I will eventually tour every City facility, meet every employee, learn what their job entails, and get ideas from them on how the City can improve their jobs (the worker knows his/her job best). By the end of this week, I will have met with the presidents of the police and fire unions to let them know my vision of labor relations (I was a longtime local president) and hear their issues with the City.

Citizens are already giving me some great ideas that will improve our City. It takes everyone.

This is going to be a fun and productive three years. Will there be issues? Of course, but together we will work through them.

I hope to see you Monday and throughout my term.

Thank you to all who voted for me! This victory would not have been possible without you.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked with Jeff Ortiz for Nederland, Britton Jones for Nederland City Council, and me going back to the planning process last October. You are incredible people who live this City.

I also thank those who voted for my opponent. You took part in the process as you saw fit. You are welcome in my administration.

Among my goals over the next three years is to reach the more than 80% of registered voters in our City who did not speak through the election. Social media comments, discussions with friends, etc. do not count - the only meaningful process in our system of government is through the ballot box. Please take part in this City's government and electoral system.

I will meet with Mayor Don Albanese tomorrow (Monday) morning at 10:00 a.m. to begin the transition process.

I will be sworn in at the next meeting of the Nederland City Council at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 12. Beginning the next day, I will begin speaking with the people of Nederland through an official City of Nederland page and the City’s official website. This page will not be updated or monitored as of that point until there are future campaign events.
