ent Historic Districts. F.O.R. supports city planning and development that enhance the area’s unique historic, natural and aesthetic character for future generations to enjoy, while taking into account the needs and contributions of the area’s existing businesses and residents. promotes understanding of the importance of parks and recreation to the Natchez economy and to the health and well-being of Natchez citizens. fosters appreciation of the economic importance of the Natchez historic preservation ordinances that protect our city’s historic assets and its eligibility for historic preservation grants. Our Heritage Preservation Tourism Industry represents the core of the Natchez economy and is directly responsible for more than 2000 jobs and $900,000 in annual city taxes. is keenly aware that opting for quick economic fixes over expert city planning could result in unsafe and shortsighted development that ultimately destroys our fragile bluff, our riverfront and our economy.

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Barney Schoby at the age of 87. Mr. Schoby devoted his life to education, public service, and the pursuit of greater opportunity for all people. As a teacher, community leader, State Representative, MS Workers’ Compensation Commissioner, member of the Adams County Board of Supervisors, and as an advocate for civil rights, his work helped shape Natchez, Adams County and the State of Mississippi for generations to come.

On behalf of the City of Natchez, I extend our prayers and deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, especially to his wife, Joyce, and family including his son and namesake Barney Schoby, Jr.

As a mark of respect for his life and legacy, I hereby direct that all flags on City of Natchez properties be lowered to half-staff effective immediately and remain so until sunset on the day of his funeral.

Sincerely,

Mayor Dan M. Gibson
City of Natchez
