For America 250, the City of Pigeon Forge displayed 44 banners commemorating local service members along The Parkway, a major tourist route leading to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The City’s Hometown Heroes Celebration honoring these veterans can be viewed online. The banner project was complemented by a book of photos and biographies and a series of library programs called Forging America: A Revolutionary Look at Appalachian Life.

Project Director Marcia Nelson (Director, Pigeon Forge Public Library) reports, “response was so overwhelmingly positive that the city plans to make this an annual library/tourism project for the foreseeable future.” The Hometown Heroes initiative was sponsored by a grant from the Tennessee Commission for the U.S. Semiquincentennial.

On Independence Day, The General Jethro Sumner Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, dedicated an America 250 Patriot Marker honoring Revolutionary War Patriots with ties to Sumner County. The monument features a bronze DAR marker on the front, while the reverse bears the names of 200 men who served the cause of American independence and later made Sumner County their home.

The dedication brought history to life with the sounds of fife and drum, rifle and cannon fire, an SAR Color Guard, and a choir performing patriotic music. Local, state, and national leaders joined veterans, members of the DAR, SAR and CAR, descendants of Revolutionary War Patriots, and citizens from throughout the community for the occasion.
