Over a month ago, I joined a state senate colleague in pointing out that our state, under Gov. Bill Lee and the Republican supermajority, has experienced 0% job growth for two consecutive years. Now, the BLS has released more data showing the first contraction in our overall labor force that Tennessee has seen outside the coronavirus pandemic in a decade.

"Tennessee’s unemployment rate remains at 3.6%, but for the fifth month in a row, the number of people employed statewide has dropped, newly released data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, BLS, shows. Around 3.42 million Tennesseans were employed in November 2025, and that number has now fallen to 3.38 million as of April."

Tennessee ranks #44 out of 50 states in America's Health Rankings, and the numbers behind that ranking tell a very important story.

Over 300,000 Tennesseans are uninsured with no access to healthcare, and that number is growing every single day. Meanwhile, $1.4 billion in federal tax dollars sit in Washington each year, waiting to be used in Tennessee.

81,000 Tennesseans fall in what's called the "coverage gap," meaning they earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but too little to afford marketplace subsidies. Tennessee is one of only 10 states that has still refused to expand Medicaid (as of February 2025), leaving hundreds of thousands without a path to affordable healthcare.

And 1.5 million Tennesseans went through the Medicaid "unwinding” process in 2024, which terminated over 500,000 people from Medicaid's TennCare.

Gifting billions in handouts (or “refunds” as Gov. Lee dubbed them) to out-of-state corporations and then stacking a billion dollar annual tax break on top of that for the same corporations was more important to Republicans than lowering costs for working families.

🚨⚖️ Legal update on a redistricting lawsuit:

A statutorily-created three-judge panel ruled against the NAACP in its state court lawsuit challenging newly redrawn congressional maps.

In its final order, the judges ruled that sovereign immunity — which protects states from being sued without consent — applied to Gov. Bill Lee and the General Assembly.

Legal challenges to the new maps are still pending in federal court. However, they have all been consolidated and reassigned under the same judge — Chief District Judge William L. Campbell — who has denied temporary restraining orders against the maps in two cases.

On Tuesday afternoon, a state court three-judge panel ruled against the NAACP in a lawsuit challenging the state's new congressional districts map.

🚨⚖️Legal update on NAACP challenge to recent congressional redistricting in state court:

On Thursday morning, attorneys for both sides appeared before a three-judge panel in Nashville. The three state court judges, one from each Grand Division, will decide whether the state’s General Assembly overstepped its authority when legislators repealed a law preventing mid-decade redistricting and changed rules for the 2026 congressional election during the recent special legislative session.

The people of Nashville should be allowed to decide whether they want more affordable housing and greenspace or auto racing in the heart of our city. I, for one, know which our city needs more.

A referendum effort aiming to write fairgrounds racing out of — and affordable housing into — the city charter approved in second pass
