In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the Camp Blount Historic Site is hosting an open house at the Pioneer Cabin. Tour guides will provide the history of Joseph Greer, a Kings Mountain Messenger and Frontiersman, while viewing the recreated cabin. Reenactors will perform historic cooking demonstrations and period-appropriate household tasks. Additional frontiersmen on horseback will enrich the immersive experience.

Happy 230th birthday, Tennessee!

The Tennessee State Capitol Building was constructed from 1845-1859. Noted architect William Strickland, who designed the capitol, would pass away in 1854 before the project was completed. Strickland is interred within the walls of his final and arguably greatest work.

On November 11, 1971, the Tennessee State Capitol Building was designated a National Historic Landmark as a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 8, 1970.

“As summer approaches, the Tennessee Wars Commission is spending more time in the field, completing easement monitoring at battlefield sites in Spring Hill. Featured property locations include the Weaver Tract on Kedron Road and two parcels at the Rippavilla Plantation. Staff was able to take some additional time to explore the Plantation site, including the cemetery.”

We would like to thank everyone who celebrated National Historic Preservation Month with us today at Clover Bottom!

We had a successful, well-attended State Review Board meeting, with all 6 nominations moving forward to the National Park Service for final review and approval for listing in the National Register of Historic Places!

Following the meeting, we were pleased to host a ceremony for our 2026 Certificate of Merit Award recipients. You can read more about the sixteen Merit Awards recipients on our website here:

Celebrate National Historic Preservation Month with us on May 15th!

The State Review Board will meet at 9:00 am CDT to examine Tennessee's proposed nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. Six nominations from across the State will be considered.

Following the State Review Board meeting, the Tennessee Historical Commission is hosting a ceremony for the recipients of the 2026 Certificate of Merit Awards program. The ceremony will begin at approximately 10:30 am CDT.

The public is invited to attend the meeting and ceremony at our office, 2941 Lebanon Pike in Nashville.

Last week, our Historic Site Program coordinators had a wonderful time providing a guided tour of our office grounds for members of the OLLI on the Move, associated with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Vanderbilt! We appreciate their visit and enjoy sharing the story of Clover Bottom and the people who lived there.

If you would like to learn more about the story of the Clover Bottom mansion, we recommend you check out "Slavery in the Clover Bottoms: John McCline’s Narrative of His Life During Slavery and the Civil War"! This is the only known first-hand account of life at Clover Bottom in the years leading up to the Civil War.

Join us for our State Review Board Meeting! Friday, May 15th at 9am CST, the State Review Board will meet to examine Tennessee's proposed nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. The meeting will be held at the Tennessee Historical Commission, located at 2941 Lebanon Pike in Nashville, as well as virtually.

The Board will vote on 6 nominations from across the state. Those nominations that are found to meet the criteria will be sent for final approval to the National Register of Historic Places at the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The nominations are:
•Methodist Episcopal Church South at Tazewell, Claiborne County
•African American Residential Districts in Nashville, TN, 1946-1975 MPDF, Davidson County
•Haynes Heights Historic District, Davidson County
•Historic County Facilities in Tennessee, ca. 1770-2000 MPDF, Statewide
•Lake County Courthouse, Lake County
•J.R. Watkins Products Building, Shelby County
