Fort Negley Visitors Center is open Tuesday - Friday: noon to 4:00 pm, Saturday: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Fort Negley Park is a 66 acre urban park located just outside downtown Nashville, Tennessee. It is named for the historic Civil War era federal fortification situated at the top of St. Fort Negley was part of a network of fortifications that protected the city from Confederate Army activities and

allowed the Federal Army to supply battles further south. Fort Negley was built in 1862 with an impressed and voluntary labor force made up of free, enslaved, and self-emancipated African American men, women, and children. Phase 1 of Fort Negley Park's 2022 Master Plan will begin Spring 2025 and will see added greenspace, additional trails, and interpretation covering Civil War to Civil Rights. Fort Negley Park is one of many facilities operated by the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation, a department of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County. Fort Negley Park trails are open, but expect ice and snow. The parking lot may not be plowed.

November 8th don't miss a day packed with activities at Fort Negley Park.

9:00 am to Noon: Try your hand at knot-tying with Metro Parks Outdoor Recreation.

10:00 am to Noon: Catch the monthly Fossil Finders program where you can dig for fossils to take home and enjoy hands-on activities related to Nashville's fossilized ancient marine life.

10:00 am until complete: Help us plant flags at the entrance to the park to honor the 2771 free and enslaved laborers that were part of building Nashville's Union fortifications 163 years ago.

10:00 am to 3:00: The 10th Illinois will be camped upon Fort Negley once again. Come enjoy drilling and weapons demonstrations and see camp life in action.

PLUS... at Noon check out our neighbors at the Nashville City Cemetery and their program honoring Revolutionary War Veterans buried at the cemetery.

In addition to performance stage, food trucks, and fireworks, the visitors center will be open, Fort Negley Park staff and Friends of Fort Negley Park members will be providing regular tours, and there will be fossil activities and stone splitting demonstrations. We wish everyone a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend. Remember those that gave their lives in defense of our nation and in pursuit of a more perfect union.

A big thanks to Chip Huffman, Commander, Department of Tennessee with Mississippi, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War for delivering our annual Memorial Day message. Sons of Union Veterans Camp #62 meets at Fort Negley this coming Wednesday, May 28 at 6:00 pm. Their programs are free and open to the public.
