A update. New data from the TN Dept. of Education shows what we have said all along, vouchers only steal dollars from your local public school system and overwhelmingly gives your tax dollars to high-income families who were already sending their kids to private schools anyway. We don't have infinite resources and don't fully fund our schools so this is the dumbest public policy I have seen enacted during my time at the Legislature.

"State Rep. Caleb Hemmer (D-Nashville) has previously criticized the state’s lack of transparency surrounding the voucher program.

“Tennessee’s voucher program is flying blind. Without basic data we can’t even know who it’s helping, who it’s leaving behind, and whether it’s worth the cost, and that’s not just bad policy, it’s a betrayal of public trust,” he said."

Recent state data shows the majority of the new school vouchers went to students with higher-income families.

It was great to attend the ribbon cutting for Stellaris International School in the Hillwood neighborhood!

Stellar’s is bringing much-needed childcare and high-quality education opportunities for Pre-K and kindergarten students. I especially enjoyed learning more about their International Baccalaureate and Spanish immersion programs.

Stellar’s chose Nashville in part because of recommendations and relationships developed through my friend Gray Skinner, and it’s exciting to see them become part of the Hillwood community.

The demand for quality childcare and Pre-K in Nashville continues to outpace supply. With the newly completed Pre-K classrooms at the former Hillwood High School not fully funded by MNPS, it’s encouraging to see innovative education organizations step up to help fill that gap and give families more options.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of a great constituent and a benevolent philanthropist for Nashville, Martha Ingram. Her vision, generosity, and leadership helped shape Tennessee for the better. From support for TPAC, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, and Vanderbilt, to countless other contributions, her impact will be felt for generations.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ingram family and all who knew and loved her.
