On Friday, August 21, 2026, the Department of Defense issued separation notices to three leaders of Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent newspaper that has served American service members since the Civil War. Editor-in-Chief Erik Slavin, Publisher Max D. Lederer Jr., and Middle East reporter Lara Korte were all dismissed, capping months of escalating tension between the newspaper's staff and Pentagon leadership over editorial control, and arriving amid a broader, multi-year effort by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to restrict press access to the building and to the U.S. military's current operations.

Slavin said the separation notice he received cited insubordination stemming from a CBS Sunday Morning interview in which he stated that censorship of news for service members would represent a "red line" he was unwilling to cross.

During a Veteran’s medical appointment, a provider who’s moving back and forth between the conversation and the computer may be quite noticeable. Documentation in the electronic health record is an important part of care, but it can also take time and attention away from the visit.

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is now using Ambient Scribe to help reduce some of that documentation work. As of June 2026, the VA had rolled out the technology to primary care providers nationwide after first testing it at 10 VA medical centers.

With a Veteran's permission, Ambient AI Scribe listens to the conversation during an appointment and creates a draft note. The provider then must review, edit, and approve the note before it becomes part of the medical record.

Sen. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, introduced legislation Aug. 5 that would change how the Department of Veterans Affairs collects separation pay from Veterans who later qualify for disability compensation, capping monthly withholding instead of stopping payments entirely until the debt is cleared.

Under current law, a Veteran who received separation pay, severance pay, or a Special Separation Benefit upon leaving service cannot also collect full VA disability compensation for the same period of service.

Risch's bill would not eliminate that requirement, but it would change how it is applied. Instead of stopping a Veteran's disability check altogether, the VA would collect the debt through monthly installments capped at no more than 25 percent of the Veteran's monthly disability compensation.

While everyday citizens can enjoy a single day free of charge, our nation's troops receive a permanent military national park pass.

Current US military members, Veterans, and Gold Star families are entitled to free daily entry to all national parks and federal recreational sites every day of the year. However, the specific privileges vary slightly based on your military status.
