Right Turn on Red

Although this issue is currently being debated within the counsel, currently Right Turn on Red is permitted in Nashville, Davidson County UNLESS there is a sign posted prohibiting it.

You may also turn left on red IF you are going from a one-way street onto a one-way street. BOTH must be one-way streets. AND you must be going the correct direction on both.

Both turns require that you first STOP, and only turn when it is safe. Meaning that you must yield to on-coming traffic and any pedestrians.

School Zone Speed Limits!

When you cross under that first sign, and it's flashing, you should already be doing 15 MPH. It is not a warning to slow down when you get to the cones.

You should be at a Maximum of 15 MPH until you PASS the 2nd sign. Think of them as start and finish lines.

Even if you don't see any children, there are still crossing guards and school traffic. We all want to arrive safe and sound at our destinations. No injuries or damage to our vehicles. Please obey the speed limits.

Entrance and Exit Ramps!

What's the difference in these signs? The black and white is regulatory and is what is absolute. The black and yellow is cautionary and is a "suggested" speed. So, you take the exit and see the 40 MPH sign, what is the ACTUAL speed limit?

The speed limit of entrance and exit ramps is the speed of the roadway that you are entering or leaving. The purpose of the ramp is to accel to the speed limit BEFORE you enter onto the interstate or to decel to a slower and safer speed AFTER you exit the interstate.

The Hermitage Exit, 221A is a perfect example. It's what we call a flyover ramp and is pretty long. And you can maintain a 70 MPH speed for quite a way. Is a car speeding if it's still doing 70? No. BUT, if it crashes can they be held accountable? Absolutely. The suggested cautionary speed is 40 MPH.

Already a Tennessee resident but moving to a new home! Congratulations. Don't forget to update your address on the vehicle and driver license. In Tennessee the local county clerk handles the vehicle tags and the Tennessee Department of Safety does the driver license.

TCA 55-50-333 says Whenever any person after applying for or receiving a license moves from the address named in the application or license, or when the name of a licensee is changed for any reason, the person shall within ten (10) days thereafter notify the department of the change or changes.

Easiest way is to do it online at https://www.tn.gov/safety/driver-services/helpful-information/address-change.html

It's doesn't have to be correct on the license itself as long as it is correct in the state's computer.

You can also visit a local self-service kiosk! Search Tn.gov for a location near you.

Just moved to Tennessee? Lots of stuff to do. Unpack, register the kids for school, get the lights and water turned on, find the best local restaurants...... AND get your Tennessee license.

EVEN if your other state license isn't expired yet.

TCA 55-50-304 5 A, says a nonresident, who establishes residency in this state, may operate a motor vehicle in the state for a period not to exceed thirty (30) days from the date of establishing the residency; provided, that the nonresident has in the nonresident's immediate possession a valid driver license issued by another state, or country;

Television in Motor Vehicle 55-09-105

(a) A person shall not operate a motor vehicle with a television receiver, a video monitor, or a television or video screen capable of displaying a television broadcast or video signal that produces entertainment or business applications, if the receiver, monitor or screen is intended to display images visible to the driver in a normal position when the vehicle is in motion.

Seems legit, right? This was popular when the portable DVD players first came out. But have you ever thought about the videos you watch on your phone? YES. This would prohibit that too.

Please keep your eyes on the road and off you phone. The Texting While Driving Law prohibits holding the phone in the driver's hand while the vehicle is in motion but watching videos, the big game or grandma chasing the cat is also a no-no even if the phone is in it's mount!
