Thanks to everyone who joined us today for a visit from Governor Kelly Ayotte. She discussed New Hampshire's strengths as one of the safest and most economically promising states, while highlighting key challenges including housing supply, childcare access, workforce development, and education outcomes. During the Q&A session, members asked about retraining programs for older workers, concerns about HCA freestanding emergency departments, demographic trends, and her approach to vetoing legislation, explaining her decision-making process and specific reasoning behind her vetoes.

Meeting recap - Tue 4/28/26

Emily Manire, Executive Director of Nashua Center, presented on the organization's history and programs, particularly focusing on the Children's Pyramid program. She explained that Nashua Center has been serving individuals with developmental disabilities for 52 years, currently supporting 332 individuals across 22 towns in southern New Hampshire. The Children's Pyramid program provides family-centered early support services for children birth to 3 years old, offering speech, physical, and occupational therapy in the home with a 95% success rate in achieving goals. Emily noted that while private insurance and state funds cover some costs, significant fundraising is needed to make up the difference, with an annual goal of $400,000 including over $200,000 for the Children's Pyramid program. The discussion concluded with Emily describing various volunteering opportunities at Nashua Center and encouraging attendees to reach out if they have skills to share or employment needs.

We had another successful 4-Way Test speech competition at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua this past Tuesday night! There were four students who received a total of $1,400 in prize money, with Noah Cava taking the top spot. His impressive speech applied the 4-Way Test to the test itself! He will move onto the regional competition this weekend!

It’s likely you’ve been hearing more and more about habeas corpus in the news. Simply stated, habeas corpus is a legal writ that protects individuals from unlawful detention by requiring authorities to justify imprisonment before a court. Want to learn more?

Join us at our weekly meeting TOMORROW: Tuesday, April 7th at noon. Our guest speaker will be Judge Joseph Laplante, attorney and jurist serving as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire.

Our club meets at Greer Hall, First Baptist Church of Nashua, 121 Manchester Street in Nashua. RSVP is not required. Our meetings are BYO lunch.

If you can’t join us in person, feel free to join via our weekly Zoom link:

Meeting ID: 845 4311 9863
Passcode: 235080

Judge Joseph N. Laplante has been involved in several habeas corpus cases, including the notable case of Father Gordon MacRae. In 2015, Laplante presided over the failed habeas corpus petition of Father MacRae, a Catholic priest convicted of sexual assault in 1994. The case has drawn significant media and political attention, with discussions about judicial fairness and the handling of habeas corpus petitions. Laplante's rulings have also been significant in other cases, such as the blocking of President Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship. This ruling was part of a class action lawsuit filed by immigrant rights groups, which certified a nationwide class of affected individuals. Judge Laplante's decisions have been described as "meticulous" and respected for balancing legal precedent with practical outcomes, reflecting his commitment to judicial integrity and fairness.

The mission of Friends of Aine is to help children and families grieving a death navigate their path to a hopeful future.
