🔧In the Field Friday🪏

Providing clean, safe, reliable water to our customers can sometimes involve digging deep, getting dirty, and, in this case, moving a fire hydrant from one part of the sidewalk to another! 💪Hydrants are designed to break away when struck with enough force by a vehicle, preventing damage below ground. But, if there is repeated damage to a hydrant, Pennichuck may adjust its location as an added layer of protection. Our technicians work hard to maintain about 5,000 fire hydrants in our distribution system, providing water our communities can count on!

🌊Watershed Wednesday🌊

The beautiful Merrimack River! Remember where the rain that washes over our watershed ends up! Even if it has a long journey, fertilizer from lawns, road salt from winter, lawn clippings, road debris, pet waste, and leaves can eventually wash down into the Pennichuck Brook ponds, the Merrimack River, and other bodies of water. We can all do our part to keep our water supply clean and safe by picking up after pets, minimizing fertilizer and chemical use, not littering, and not dumping lawn waste into the water.

☀️🌡️Water Restrictions🌡️☀️

When the temperature rises along with the demand for water in the summer, some local water systems could become depleted. Pennichuck has water restrictions in place for these systems, helping to ensure there is always enough water for domestic uses, like cooking, cleaning, and bathing, as well as for fire protection in our communities. Customers under a water restriction were notified by postcard in May, and updated postcards are sent out whenever there is a change. Did you know that less than 1% of Earth’s total water is usable freshwater? Pennichuck works hard 24/7 to provide reliable high quality water to our customers and protect our water sources for generations to come. How can you help us protect this most essential natural resource?

💊 Do not flush old medications.
🐕 Pick up pet waste to prevent harmful bacteria and nitrogen from washing into lakes and streams.
🎨 Properly dispose of paint, motor oil, and chemicals, never down drains.
🚗 Fix vehicle leaks quickly to stop them from running off into storm systems.
🌻 Avoid using chemical lawn and garden fertilizers, which run off into local water supplies when it rains.

We can all do our part to keep our water clean and safe!

🌧Watershed Wednesday🌧

It's a rainy day on the Merrimack River in Nashua! Pennichuck's surface water supply for the Nashua Core system comes from the Pennichuck Brook and Merrimack River watersheds. A watershed is a land area where precipitation within its boundaries drains or seeps into wetlands, streams, rivers, or lakes. This video shows the watershed in action with water running downhill into the river 💦 You can help minimize pollution in the watershed by reducing and using responsibly any fertilizers, pesticides, and household chemicals. It was good to hear Governor Kelly Ayotte speak to the accomplishment that we as a state have achieved and the challenges that we can address going forward. We were also able to witness the recognition of retiring public servants, State Senator Cindy Rosenwald and former State Senator Peggy Gilmore. Congratulations to both.
