🚧 M-50 ROAD CONSTRUCTION ALERT 🚧

Starting around June 15, MDOT will begin resurfacing M-50 from Stony Lake Road to Napoleon Road. Work is expected to be completed by the end of July.

Drivers should expect single-lane closures, flaggers, and potential delays, especially during peak traffic times. Consider alternate routes when possible.

All local businesses will remain open during construction. Please note that using private business parking lots to bypass traffic is not permitted. The Napoleon Township Police Department will be monitoring these areas and enforcing traffic laws to help keep employees, customers, and motorists safe.

We know road construction can be frustrating, but your patience and cooperation help keep our community and road crews safe. Thank you!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Joint Release – Napoleon Township Police & Fire Departments, & Napoleon Community Schools

Nine Count Felony Petition Authorized in Connection with Napoleon Schools' “Swatting” Incident

Napoleon Township — The Napoleon Township Police Department, Napoleon Township Fire Department, and Napoleon Community Schools have been advised that the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office has authorized a nine-count juvenile petition against a 14-year-old juvenile in connection with the threatening calls that resulted in a district-wide lockdown at Napoleon Community Schools on May 5, 2026, and the subsequent school closure on May 6, 2026.

According to the Jackson County Office of the Prosecutor, the authorized charges include:
• False Threat of Terrorism
• Conspiracy to Commit a False Threat of Terrorism
• False Threat of a Bomb
• Conspiracy to Commit a False Threat of a Bomb
• False Public Threat
• Conspiracy to Commit a False Public Threat
• False Report of a Felony
• Conspiracy to Commit a False Report of a Felony
• Using a Computer to Commit a Crime Punishable by 20 Years or More

The lead charges include offenses punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The charges stem from the juvenile’s alleged involvement in three separate threatening calls made to law enforcement agencies that triggered a large-scale emergency response and lockdown procedures throughout the Napoleon Community School District.

During the incident, an extensive response was initiated involving 26 police units from six law enforcement agencies and 18 fire and rescue units from at least seven agencies. First responders immediately implemented emergency protocols, coordinated searches of school facilities, and worked closely with school administration, teachers, support staff, and district personnel to ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and the community.

As we stated throughout this incident, any threat directed toward our schools will always be treated as real and responded to with the highest level of urgency and professionalism. While these types of incidents are often referred to as “swatting” calls, they create very real fear, anxiety, and disruption for students, parents, school staff, and the entire community, while also placing a significant strain on emergency resources.

This incident also reinforced the strength of the partnership between Napoleon Community Schools and emergency services. The coordinated efforts between school administrators, teachers, support staff, law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and responding agencies demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protecting our children and community.

We again want to express our sincere appreciation to our school staff, students, parents, law enforcement partners, fire and EMS personnel, and community members for their professionalism, patience, understanding, and cooperation throughout this incident.

Due to the sensitive nature of juvenile proceedings, the identity of the juvenile respondent will not be released.

This morning, the Napoleon Township Police Department conducted to***co compliance checks at every store in the township. We’re proud to share that every business checked IDs and refused to sell to a minor.

Even more impressive — for the past three years of conducting compliance checks on behalf of the State of Michigan, not a single store in Napoleon Township has been cited for selling to***co or alcohol to minors. That kind of consistency speaks volumes about our local businesses and their employees.

Special shoutout to Cutler from Kelly Fuels, pictured here, and to all of the store employees who take these responsibilities seriously every single day.

Thank you to our local businesses for helping keep our community’s kids safe.

From the Chiefs to the Napoleon Community,

Now that this incident has come to a close, we wanted to personally reach out to our community and express how proud and thankful we are for the incredible response from everyone involved.

First and foremost, we want to recognize the amazing staff at Napoleon Community Schools. From the teachers, administrators, office staff, support personnel, and everyone in between, the response was nothing short of heroic. In an extremely stressful and difficult situation, everyone remained calm, focused, and committed to protecting the students in their care. Their professionalism and dedication were extraordinary, and this incident clearly demonstrated that training and preparation truly matter. The school staff responded flawlessly under pressure, and our entire community should be proud of them.

One area that we had discussed and planned for, but had never truly practiced on this scale, was the reunification of students with their families. While it was naturally emotional and challenging, the staff at Napoleon Schools handled the process incredibly well. Their organization, compassion, and commitment helped bring calm to an otherwise frightening situation.

To the parents and members of our community, we also want to say thank you. We understand the fear, anxiety, frustration, and uncertainty many of you felt while trying to get information and reunite with your children. Despite being placed in a situation no parent ever wants to experience, we witnessed patience, understanding, and respect from our community. While there were necessary boundaries and procedures that had to be followed to ensure everyone’s safety, you handled yourselves with tremendous grace during an emotional and stressful event. We saw the fear and relief in your faces, and we appreciate the trust you placed in all of us during those difficult moments.

We also want to extend our sincere gratitude to every law enforcement officer, firefighter, EMS provider, dispatcher, and first responder who responded. The professionalism, teamwork, and dedication shown by every agency involved was outstanding. The cooperation between agencies and the commitment to protecting our schools and community was truly remarkable. We cannot thank them enough for their efforts and service.

Finally, this incident reminded us once again what makes Napoleon such a special community. In a time of fear and uncertainty, people came together, supported one another, and focused on protecting our children and community. We are incredibly proud to serve this community alongside such dedicated school staff, first responders, and citizens.

Thank you all for your professionalism, patience, and support.

Sincerely,
