It has come to our attention that during the over night hours we lost another law enforcement officer to gun fire.

From what we know the Van Zandt County Sheriff Department and Canton Police Department were attempting to execute an arrest warrant on a violent subject when a gun fight ensued. One Van Zandt County Deputy was shot and killed and one Canton Police officer was also shot and transported to the hospital. The suspect was also shot and killed.

Please join us in uplifting these departments and their families in your prayers, as they try to navigate these difficult times. It is always tragic to hear of a law enforcement officer losing their life but even more so when it’s close to home.

Being a law enforcement officer in today’s time is truly a selfless act. It is one of the most thankless professions out there and yet a select few still choose to do it anyway. This is something you are born with, a deep calling within you that’s like a thirst you cannot quench. It is a brotherhood unlike any other and to us, it’s not a job or a career, it’s simply who we are. It is a purpose and a duty that must be fulfilled, even if it kills us, and sometimes it does..

On Tuesday, September 22, a Naples Officer was on patrol on Highway 77 when he observed a Dodge Charger traveling over the posted speed limit. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle for speeding and made contact with the vehicle occupants.

During the course of the traffic stop, the officer obtained probable cause to search the vehicle. During a probable cause vehicle search, the officer located a large amount of US currency concealed within the vehicle. The occupants gave officers conflicting stories about their travel plans, and use for the currency.

An investigation was conducted and officers learned that the driver of the vehicle is a major drug dealer in the Cass County area. It was also discovered that the driver was on his way to Dallas from Cass County to purchase a large amount of illegal drugs/ narcotics (likely several pounds). These drugs would then be transported back to Cass County and be distributed in the local communities there.

The driver of the vehicle, Anthony Deal-Barrer, was placed under arrest for Money Laundering >=$2,500

ANOTHER SEARCH WARRANT BY NAPLES PD

On 09-03-2026, the Naples Police Department received credible information of the whereabouts of Elijah Zvanovec, AKA “Slavi”, who had felony and misdemeanor warrants out of the Naples Police Department and Omaha Police Department.

Naples, Omaha, and DPS officers responded to a residence in Jenkins and located Elijah at the residence, where he was taken into custody for the outstanding warrants. While at the residence, Naples officers discovered probable cause to apply for a narcotics search warrant for the residence. A district judge reviewed and issued the search warrant.

This same date, the Naples Police Department executed the search warrant at the Jenkins residence. The Lone Star Police Department, Texas Highway Patrol, and Morris Sheriff Dept assisted with the ex*****on of the warrant.

During a search of the residence Naples officers located and seized various amounts of several different kinds of illegal drugs including methamphetamine. Two subjects inside the home were arrested, Jessica Wyatt and Wesley Keenan. There are other subjects who reside in the home that had left prior to officers arrival, and warrants will be filed for their arrest, and numerous other arrests are expected from this investigation.

Once at the jail, it was found that Jessica had snuck a large quantity of methamphetamine into the jail, which was discovered during the book in process. Jessica was charged with Manufacture or Delivery of Controlled Substance PG1>=4G=4G=1G=4G=4G=1G=1G

NAPLES OFFICERS GRADUATE BASIC SWAT SCHOOL.

The Naples Texas Police Department is proud to announce that Officer Gonzales and Officer Randle successfully completed a comprehensive one-week SWAT training course on Friday.

This intensive course brought together law enforcement officers from the Naples area and several surrounding agencies. Throughout the week, officers participated in specialized training designed to strengthen their ability to safely and effectively respond to some of the most challenging and unpredictable situations law enforcement may encounter.

The training focused on advanced tactics and coordinated responses that can be utilized when executing search and arrest warrants, responding to active shooter incidents, managing hostage situations, and handling barricaded subjects or other high-risk calls.

Training of this nature is not only about tactical skills—it is about preparation, communication, teamwork, and safety. The knowledge and experience gained through this course will help our officers make sound decisions under stressful circumstances and work more effectively with other law enforcement agencies when a critical incident occurs.

Most importantly, this training helps protect our citizens and our officers. Having officers who are properly trained and prepared for high-risk situations can help reduce unnecessary risks, improve coordination, and provide a safer response when seconds matter.

The Naples Texas Police Department is committed to providing our community with professional, well-trained officers and continually investing in training that improves the safety and security of the citizens we serve.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Gonzales and Officer Randle on successfully completing this demanding course. We are proud of their dedication to training, their commitment to their fellow officers, and their continued commitment to serving the Naples community.

Congratulations to all the officers who completed this course!

The information released in this post will be very limited due to this still being an open investigation, and due to the victim being a child.

With that said, a couple of weeks ago the Naples Police Department launched an investigation into a report of possible sexual conduct involving a grown adult and a 14 year old child. Naples officers got to work right away, making this a top priority case. During the course of the investigation, officers obtained evidence and conducted numerous interviews.

With the evidence and information that the officers learned, Naples Police Department applied for an arrest warrant for the arrest of Jeffery Edwin Matthews, of Naples Texas, for Indecency With a Child Sexual Contact, a second degree Felony. A judge reviewed, approved, and issued a warrant for the arrest of Jeffery Matthews. On Friday, Naples officers located Matthew’s and took him into custody, booking him into the Morris County Jail. A Naples Judge set Matthew’s total bond at $100,000. As of Monday, Matthew’s was still in the Morris County Jail.

This is still an active and on going investigation. If anyone has any additional information about this case, or other cases involving Matthew’s, please contact the Naples Police Department or Morris County Sheriff Department.
