Keeping Wiggins clean is especially important during sea turtle nesting season because even small amounts of human debris can significantly reduce the chances that nesting turtles and hatchlings survive.
Why beach cleanliness matters
* Trash can block or injure turtles. Adult females come ashore at night to lay eggs, and hatchlings later crawl to the Gulf. Discarded chairs, umbrellas, toys, fishing line, plastic, and other debris can trap, injure, or obstruct them.
* Litter attracts predators. Food scraps and trash draw animals such as raccoons, birds, and other scavengers that may dig up and eat turtle eggs or prey on hatchlings.
* Plastic pollution threatens marine life. Turtles can become entangled in debris or mistake plastic for food once they return to the water. Proper disposal of plastics, fishing line, and netting helps reduce these risks.
* Beach obstacles can prevent successful nesting. Sandcastles, holes, and abandoned beach gear can discourage females from nesting or make it difficult for hatchlings to reach the ocean.
So please: Take all trash and belongings off the beach. Avoid bright lights, flash photography, and visible beachfront lighting at night. Fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before leaving.
These simple actions help ensure that nesting mothers can lay their eggs safely and that hatchlings have the best chance of reaching the Gulf and surviving. Thank you 🩵🌊🐢
