“People don't fake depression. They fake being okay.”

That’s why learning to recognize the warning signs of su***de matters.

Too often, people who are struggling hide their pain behind a smile, a busy schedule, or the words, "I'm fine." Changes in mood, withdrawal from others, giving away possessions, expressions of hopelessness, increased substance use, or talking about being a burden should never be ignored.

When something feels off, trust your instincts and take action. Reach out. Ask direct questions. Stay present. Help connect the person to support. A conversation may feel uncomfortable, but silence can be far more dangerous.

This 988 Day (September 8th), remember that su***de prevention starts with noticing, listening, and responding. Every life is worth the effort, and every moment matters.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available 24/7 through the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. "You don't need to have all the answers. You just need to notice, care enough to ask, and be willing to stay."

"The strongest words a man can say aren't 'I've got this.' They're 'I need help.'

Last week, I was honored to be featured by Darren Doyle and KQ2 ABC News discussing the stigma surrounding men's mental health. One message stood out above all others: too many men are struggling in silence.

We often hear that men should be tough, self-reliant, and able to handle problems on their own. Unfortunately, those expectations can keep people from seeking support when they need it most.
The reality is that asking for help is not weakness. It's self-awareness. It's courage. It's strength.

As we begin National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, let's remember that men are at significantly higher risk for su***de, yet many never reach out because they fear judgment, shame, or being perceived as weak. The conversations we have today can literally save lives tomorrow.

If you're struggling, know this: you don't have to carry everything alone. And if someone you care about seems different, withdrawn, or overwhelmed, check in. A simple conversation can make a profound difference.

Thank you again to Darren Doyle and KQ2 Newsroom for helping bring attention to this important issue.

Today, August 31st, is International Overdose Awareness Day.

Someone's child. Someone's parent. Someone's partner. Someone's best friend.

Behind every overdose statistic is a human life, a grieving family, and a story that deserved more time.

While overdose deaths have declined in recent years, the danger remains very real. Fentanyl continues to appear in the drug supply, often without a person's knowledge. Many overdoses happen when someone doesn't even realize what they are taking.

Just as important as awareness is knowing what an overdose may look like: a person who cannot be woken up, is unresponsive, breathing very slowly or not at all, making unusual choking or gurgling sounds, or showing pale, gray, or bluish lips or fingernails. These are signs of a medical emergency.

Today, we remember those we've lost. We support those who are grieving. And we recommit ourselves to education, prevention, compassion, and action.

Awareness saves lives. Narcan saves lives. Compassion saves lives.

In this week's “Mental Health Moment,” I discuss why International Overdose Awareness Day matters and what every one of us can do to help prevent the next tragedy.

Sometimes, the strongest words a man can say are, “I need help."

I was honored to be featured by Darren Doyle and KQ2 Newsroom in the story, "Defeating the Stigma Around Men's Mental Health." The conversation highlighted an important reality: too many men continue to suffer in silence because they've been taught that vulnerability is weakness. In reality, recognizing when you're struggling and reaching out for support takes tremendous courage. Men face significant barriers to seeking help, including stigma surrounding mental health and substance use concerns, yet meaningful healing often begins with a single conversation.

The truth is that many men are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, addiction, or other mental health challenges without anyone around them knowing. We are far less alone than we think. When we create spaces where men can talk openly, seek support, and connect with others, we help replace shame with hope.

Thank you to Darren Doyle and KQ2 for helping bring attention to this important issue and encouraging conversations that can truly save lives.
