Our History - In January of 1927, an interest to initiate a preservation project known as the Hobson Mill Preservation Project evolved into a m

ovement to establish a chapter of the National Society Daughters of The American Revolution. On February 13, 1928, the Fort Payne Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of The American Revolution was organized with twenty-two charter members. The Charter was then confirmed by the National Board on May 19, 1928. The Fort Payne Chapter is named in recognition of a fort constructed near Naper Settlement by Captain Morgan L. Payne in 1832. The fort was intended to shelter and defend settlers during the Black Hawk Wars. Fort Payne was located on the present day grounds of Merner Fieldhouse of North Central College of Naperville. The Fort Payne Chapter, located in Naperville, Illinois, is composed of volunteers who work to support the goals and projects of the NSDAR. The Fort Payne Chapter meets monthly September through May. Please contact us if you'd like to attend a meeting or are interested in membership with the DAR.

Our chapter was on the go over Memorial Day weekend.
Through the Adopt-a-Park program, members planted annuals by the Veterans Valor statue. Next we dedicated the Patriot Plaque in Veterans Park (see previous post) on Sunday. Then it was time for Naperville's Memorial Day Parade on Monday.
Thank you, Fort Payne, for your enthusiasm, dedication and stamina!

With full hearts we dedicated the chapter's Patriot Plaque on Sunday in Veterans Park in Naperville. As part of the America250! celebration, the plaque honors the men and women who sacrificed so much for our liberty.

Joining us were three former Regents, Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli, Marty Callahan of Sons of the American Revolution: Fox Valley Chapter, Illinois SSAR President Jeff Case, many chapter members and their families, and Naperville Park District members.

A Liberty Tree, the shoot of a Jefferson elm obtained from the
Smithsonian, has been planted at the head of the memorial. The Sons of Liberty gathered under such a tree to protest the Stamp Act.

We are very grateful for the support shown from so many for this project, particularly to Dr. Kay Wier, chair of the America250! committee.

A bronze plaque dedicated to the men and women who helped achieve American independence 250 years ago will be dedicated at 2 pm Sunday, May 24, in Veterans Park, 303 E Gartner.

The plaque and a “Liberty Tree,” the shoot of a Jefferson elm obtained from the Smithsonian, recently were installed by Naperville’s Fort Payne Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) to commemorate America’s 250th birthday.

Joining the event will be Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli and members of the Sons of the American Revolution: Fox Valley Chapter in full Continental Army dress. A banner naming all 150 Revolutionary War ancestors related to current Fort Payne NSDAR members will be displayed.

We look forward to seeing you!

Fort Payne hosted Illinois State Regent Marria Blinn at its May chapter meeting. Regent Blinn gave a compelling historical overview of Illinois, beginning with the indigenous people who built mounds in southern Illinois to modern-day. There is a lot about this state we have yet to learn!

We also got a glimpse of the well-begun State Regent's project in Batavia, IL. The Liberty Education Plaza, located next to the Flag Day Monument, will be an outdoor educational space, honoring DAR values of historic preservation, education and patriotism.
